Despite being an unmistakably British car, the Rolls-Royce was also built in the United States during the entire decade of the 1920s. American-made models are nicknamed Springfield, the Massachusetts town where the brand had set its production plant between 1920 and 1931.

The goal was to supply the local market without having to pay the high rates on imported cars. Rolls Royce of America was pretty successful until its closure as a result of the stock market crash of 1929 and the Great Depression that followed.

After building the Silver Ghost model, in 1926 the Springfield factory went on to produce the Phantom I. Like the original one made in Derby, it was an evolution of is immediate predecessor on chassis and suspension. Cars were the same on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean, except steering wheel and gear lever position (the same as in continental Europe for the USA), and some elements of the electrical equipment.

Until then almost all Springfield Rolls Royces had been bodied in the factory, but that same year RROA absorbed Brewster coachbuilder which immediately took charge of such work in its Long Island facilities, near New York City. Brewster designer Carl Beck would create no less than 26 different body types for the Phantom I.

This specimen is the oldest of the three Springfield Rolls-Royce in our collection. It was built in 1926 and its two-tone Mayfair body is the last (number 1.831) of the 30 produced by Brewster of this type on short chassis (3.65 m wheelbase). Then the Phantom I would adopt a slightly larger wheelbase (3.72 m). The vehicle is in perfect mechanical and bodywork condition, , and is frequently used to run in vintage car rallies.
