The Renault-Sport-Spider is typically a car never to be repeated and was only fully understood long after production ceased. In the 90’s car manufacturers were still able to design a car with only one thought in mind: Drive ecstasy! What with today’s strict emission and pedestrian safety demands one thing is sure; a pure sports car like the Renault Sport Spider will never hit the market again. Let’s not prevaricate, Renault had pure bad luck at the introduction of the Sport Spider. Almost simultaneously Lotus introduced its Elise which weighed a mere 752 kg in its lightest configuration. The 938 kg Renault Sport Spider seemed a bit heavy by comparison. The Renault Sport Spider did have a number of advantages over the Lotus. You could order your Spider without a front screen, it is a proper open 2-seater, the boot space is more accessible and does not get as hot, the driving position is better and above all the Renault Sport Spider engine is a lot stronger than the Lotus’s Rover K-series one. Another advantage over the Lotus is that a Renault Sport Spider is a lot rarer than a first generation Elise. We can now say that in hindsight people who were brave enough to order a Renault Sport Spider in the 90’s have come good. After 20 years the Renault Sport Spider has become a fixed feature in the lightweight sports car class. Values have always been good and of late are rising steadily. Of the planned 2,000 cars only 1,725 were actually built, of which 80 were used in a special race class. Our Renault Sport Spider is a fully spec’d car. In “Renault Sport Spider speak” that means to addition of a front screen and steering wheel airbag. Renault had a fairly extensive program of factory accessories for the Spider. This car for instance has the optional 16” wheels and there is even an accompanying file listing the accessories is present! The previous owner also accessorised the car further with an Elia sports exhaust, a full hood, a decal set inspired by the Spider Trophy and a tonneau cover. It is not just the accessories that make this car; it is also in excellent condition and has the original car wallet containing its manual and service book. A spare key is also included. In 1999 this Renault Sport Spider entered mainstream traffic in Germany. It is therefore one of the very last Spiders built. The car is in extraordinary great shape. The “Gris Titane” is in very good condition as is the fibreglass bodywork. The bodywork is undamaged and aligns correctly. The upward tilting doors also open and shut perfectly with ease. Similarly the interior trim is in very good shape. The Recaro seats are pristine, all interior paneling has been very well looked after and all instruments are in good working order. Underneath the car all is well. The original flat bottom is undamaged. The engine and gearbox are as excepted: Bone dry. The low 29,934 mileage together with the excellent maintenance record provide top-quality mechanical condition for this Renault Sport Spider. The 2.0 F7R 16V engine and manual gearbox come straight out of the iconic Renault Clio Williams. Looking back we surely can state that the 90’s were a very good era for Renault. The engine runs a treat and sounds fantastic. The transmission allows for smooth, precise and easy gear changes. The 2.0 16V engine delivers 150 Hp and gets from 0 -100 km/hr in 6.9 seconds. It has a top speed of 215 km/hr. The car’s exception condition is exemplified by the pristine condition of the engine bay. This is without doubt a top quality Renault Sport Spider with a lovely low mileage. It has a complete provenance and truly has nothing left wanting attention. A very interesting car for the serious collector as well as for someone who just wants one of the very best Renault Sports Spider’s around!
