The 911 was first introduced for the 1964 model year, and the first of countless upgrades to the popular 911 came in 1966 with the introduction of the 911 S. Easily distinguishable by its stylish Fuchs five-spoked alloy wheels, the “S” featured a heavily revised engine producing 160 bhp. Improved handling courtesy of a lengthened wheelbase arrived in 1969, and then in 1970 the 911’s air-cooled, flat-six engine underwent the first of many enlargements to 2.2-liters, producing 180 bhp with Bosch mechanical fuel injection when fitted in the 911 S model. By this time the three models of 911 were being offered by Porsche: the base model 911 T, the luxury 911 E, and top-of-the-line performance 911 S, all of which were available as either a closed coupe or open top Targa. Coupled with partial aluminum bodywork and improved light-alloy brakes, the 911 S provided an exemplary driving platform for spirited high-speed driving, though low-end torque and acceleration proved—in rather embarrassing fashion during press testing-- to be outmatched by the contemporaneous 911 E-configuration.

This 1970 911 S 2.2 coupe is a slick top Swiss delivery example and presents exceedingly well—having recently been put through a full cosmetic and powertrain restoration executed by Auto Mathis of St. Moritz, Switzerland, and Mike Gnani’s Eleven Solutions of Benediktbeuern, Germany. A binder of accompanying invoices amount to over 55,000 CHF, thus verifying the commissioned restoration and the services provided therein, in full detail—with over 260 parts numbers listed. Originally delivered on April 8, 1970 in Tangerine over black leatherette, this chassis sports fresh true-to-factory paintwork and slight cosmetic additions present on this chassis include a Momo Prototipo steering wheel and aftermarket speakers mounted in the rear deck. The staggered Fuchs wheels are presently shod in Matrac XM-series tires—a perfect accoutrement for sporty all-season jaunts in this late production C-series chassis. However, it is important to note that this car is fitted with both a replacement engine from 1971 and gearbox of the correct type.

Now offered with an accompanying spare wheel, Kardex, recent maintenance records, invoices, and rebuild process-photos courtesy of Mike Gnani, this presentable and mechanically restored 911 S 2.2 is undoubtedly an alluring prospect for further enjoyment.
