Debuting at the 1965 Frankfurt Motor Show as the 4-in-einem sports car, Porsche's long-lived 911 Targa entered production for the 1967 model year. Advertised by Porsche as "a truly functional high-performance convertible for safe, enjoyable driving in every kind of weather," the Targa combined the open-air character of a convertible with the structural integrity and driving dynamics of the 911 Coupe. Within a year of the Targa's inception, Porsche began to offer a fixed, heated glass wraparound rear window, which became standard for 1968. Yet the ability to order the original folding, plastic rear window to retain the original four-in-one concept remained in dwindling numbers until 1970. With just 307 RoW-market Targas produced for the 1968 model year, these are among the most sought-after early 911 Targas, prized for the rarity of the soft window and the very forward-thinking 1960s color palette offered by Style Porsche.

Completed in Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen on 25 May 1968, this short wheelbase "Soft-Window" 911 L Targa combines the open-air character of the original Targa with the high specification of the 911 Lux model. Offered for a single year only, the 911 L combined an uprated carbureted 130-PS flat-six and a five-speed manual transmission with the standard equipment and the cosmetic specification of the top-of-the-line 911 S. Finished in the era-evoking shade of Blutorange (Tangerine) this 911 L features a Black-upholstered interior with numerous factory-fitted options as confirmed by its Porsche-issued Kardex warranty card.

Its Kardex further records it was first sold through Porsche MAHAG of Munich, West Germany, to Walter Hartmann. Copies of the bill of sale and order form, dated 18 June 1968, confirm this along with its original retail price of 24.328,70 DM. Incredibly, this special Soft-Window 911 L was held by the original owner from new for a remarkable 57 years until 2025. An extensive collection of maintenance invoices accompanying the car reflects the care of its long-term owner, with more than €100.000 invested over the decades, and the car today presents in excellent mechanical and cosmetic condition.

The accompanying documentation provides an unusually complete record of its ownership, beginning in the summer of 1968 and continuing through decades of maintenance. Preserved in its original colors and retaining its matching-numbers drivetrain, this rare short wheelbase Soft-Window 911 L offers an unusually complete picture of early Targa ownership in grand style.
