EXTERIOR
Borrowing traits from different eras of Porsche’s vast motorsport lineage this bespoke 911 build has to be one of the coolest creations on 4 wheels; with its ’74 style body work and ducktail harking back to the companies classic track icons whilst the Cibie spotlights, lifted suspension and monstrous BF-Goodrich All-Terrain tyres clearly borrow from the legendary 953 rally car that stormed to Paris-Dakar success.

Meticulously thought out the attention to detail in the bespoke creation is unparalleled; featuring all new body panels and full sound insulation as well as a fully reinforced shell and roll cage fabricated by Steve Monk at BodyWerks, no expense was spared in the build. Whilst carrying out the fabrication new seals were added around the vehicle to prevent water ingress, making clear this Safari was not created just for the look but to conquer just about any terrain it comes across.

If the chunky tyres, bumper bars and monstrous ride height don’t make this incredible 911 standout its paintwork certainly does the trick. Finished in a shade of ‘Perfect Blue’ a colour taken from the Singer paint catalogue, it is complemented with a contrasting white centre stripe, Porsche scripts and white mudflaps. As well as the colour it also borrows a set of genuine Singer bullet wingmirrors, and all new brightwork which beautifully frames the sleek silhouette.

INTERIOR
Further embodying the motorsport inspiration of this 911 the custom interior, commissioned to Porsche interior specialist PF911, comes fitted with a full tonal roll cage and custom set of Recaro SPG Bucket seats. The buckets were re-trimmed with an extra inch of padding to provide further comfort and upholstered in a fantastic combination of semi-aniline Tan leather and unique Carrera script fabric, which also spans the dashboard and lightweight style doorcards. Facing the driver sits a cluster of VDO instrument gauges, as well as a genuine 993 GT2 Clubsport steering wheel, trimmed in synthetic suede with a blue top centre marker.

Delving deeper into Porsche’s historic race cars the Safari is fitted with a layered wooden gearknob, reminiscent of the Le Mans winning 917, connected to a semi-exposed RenShift gear linkage and a unique hazard light switch which was taken directly from Jacky Ickx’s Paris-Dakar winning 959!

Although the 911 is built to off-road spec, the brief was to create an atmosphere that resembled the comfort of a classic Range Rover rather than a hardcore racer and so the car was built with full sound insulation, interior carpets and even a Continental head unit the cover the modern essentials, providing CD, Bluetooth, DAB and USB inputs.

ENGINE & TRANSMISSION
Keeping things traditional the Safari features an air-cooled Flat-6 engine however the original 3.2 unit has been swapped out in favour of a later 3.6L Non-Varioram engine from a low mileage 993, which produces 300bhp. Turn the key and the engine bursts into life, with a distinct rasp from the custom exhaust system before it settles into a purposeful gruff idle.

The 5-Speed G15 gearbox is a perfect match for the engine, with a robust feel that revels in some positive input from the driver. At the rear a Quaife limited slip differential puts the power down effortlessly through the rear wheels, equally effective on the road or at maximum attack on a gravel track.

WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES
The 16″ Fuchs wheels are about all that remain from the traditional 911 setup, with the rest of the components upgraded with off-road alternatives. BF-Goodrich All-Terrain ‘Baja Champion’ tyres are squeezed into the wide arches, providing exceptional grip in the rear wheel drive set up thanks to the positioning of the Flat-6 in the back.

Heavily modified suspension also gives a helping hand, with Bilstein struts with VON internals and some Long-Travel VON Dampers increasing the ground clearance and soaking up any bumps along the way. Suspension rubbers have been replaced with a high end set of Elephant racing Bushes set up to ensure the Safari’s handling is tight and precise.

HISTORY FILE
First registered on 07/06/1984 this 911 Safari started life as a 3.2 Carrera, supplied new by Dick Lovett Wiltshire. A well loved example the car covered over 150k miles with a stack of invoices and stamps in the original service book that outline a history of good maintenance throughout. In 2019 the car was taken on by Heritage Autowerks, the UK’s main Singer agent at the time, who decided the 3.2 Carrera would be the perfect base on which to build an ambitious 911 Safari Conversion. This was alongside two other cars as a customer collaboration project for group touring together.

Initially the ’84 Carrera shell was completely stripped before being fitted with a complete new roof, new front wings, new door skins and rear ducktail to replicate a ’74 style shell. Sound insulation was added around the body before being completely reinforced; with sidebars mounted into the jacking points, bumper bars mounted to the chassis and suspension pick-up points, full underbody protection with guard panels and carefully sealing to prevent water ingress.

Upgrading the drivetrain was next on the list, with the original 3.2 engine swapped for a 3.6L Non-Varioram engine taken from a low mileage 993. The engine was fitted with a full custom exhaust system and then paired to a G15 gearbox and Quaife limited slip differential. Upgrades meant the 993 unit had an output of 300 bhp, much closer to that of the original 953 Safari that the build was inspired by. Naturally the suspension was also completely rebuilt to a full off-road set up, with parts supplied by specialists Elephant racing including Long travel dampers, Bilstein struts, new bushes and a set of BF-Goodrich All-Terrain ‘Baja Champion’ tyres.

After the build was completed at the end on 2019 the car featured in 911 & Porsche World magazine. The lengthy test included areas of road driving as well as a full off road assault which was summarised with a simple statement by the test driver and Editor, “Have I really had more fun than this in a 911?…I don’t think I have. In fact I don’t think it would be possible”.
