Beschreibung
The Pontiac GTO was introduced in summer 1964. The GTO was initially just a more powerful variant of the Pontiac Tempest Le Mans. One year later it became a separate model which, in 1966, and thanks to its high performance 200 km/h top speed and it‘s reasonable price, found 95’000 willing buyers. The GTO thus initiated the legendary “Muscle Car” era. In 1968 with the introduction of the second generation, the GTO received numerous modifications. The coachwork design became more rounded, similar to other GM A-body models. The GTO for the model year 1970 received a different front. The twin headlights were no longer covered and boasted large chrome trim. The cabriolet offered here was most probably imported as a new car from the USA and first registered on the 21st of August 1970. Already in 1978, the Pontiac was taken over by the vendors family who lovingly cared for the car in their own commercial repair shop. At the beginning of the 1980‘s the coachwork was restored and repainted from the original red to the current light blue. Matching with the colour, the previously black soft top was replaced by a white example. Since then, the GTO has only been used on special occasions and has been stored for some time. Eventually the car in 2016 received a new custom-made stainless steel exhaust system, and in 2017 it was extensively prepared for a Veteran MOT. The engine and the gearbox were re-sealed, the ignition system overhauled together with the brakes and new brake callipers were installed at the front. The suspension received an overhaul together with new tyres. In 2022, around 1’000 kilometres later, a service was performed and the carburettor overhauled. Receipts exceeding 40’000 Swiss francs since 2016 are available. As one of 3’783 cabriolets of that year, two owners and only 48’600 kilometres driven, the GTO is in good to very good condition. The 6.6 litre V8 with its 355 SAE horsepower is running perfectly and the automatic gearbox is shifting as it should. Besides the period-correct Wolfrace aluminium rims installed, a set of original steel rims is available and will be handed over with the car. The most recent Veteran MOT was completed in May 2025 allowing the new owner to enjoy his cabriolet immediately.
