Chassis No. WDDRJ7HA5EA010203
Introduced in early winter 2012, the SLS AMG Black Series was the most extreme, track-focused evolution of the road-going SLS lineup, pushing the limits of AMG engineering and standing as the rawest, most exhilarating modern Gullwing for the road. Power came from an enhanced 6.3-liter M159 V8, now producing 631 horsepower at an 8,000 rpm redline thanks to a revised valve train, new intake routing, and retuned engine management. A shorter final-drive ratio sharpened the response, dropping the zero-to–60 mph time to 3.6 seconds. The extensive use of carbon fiber in the hood, rear bulkhead, and torque tube, combined with a titanium exhaust and a lithium-ion battery, all contributed to weight reduction. Additionally, repositioning the AMG seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox lowered the center of gravity.
Handling was honed with a stiffer suspension, recalibrated speed-sensitive steering, a wider track, and lightweight forged ten-spoke AMG wheels wrapped in specially developed Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires. An electronically controlled limited-slip differential and AMG RIDE CONTROL suspension delivered precise, agile dynamics, while standard AMG carbon-ceramic brakes provided impressive near fade-free stopping power.
Visually, flared fenders, a deeper front apron, a carbon rear diffuser, side skirts, and darkened headlamps signaled its intent. Inside, Alcantara and Designo leather trimmed the focused cabin in Black, Red, or a two-tone Black and Red. Lightweight AMG sport bucket seats cut 33 pounds, and the optional removal of the COMAND system from a carbon center console saved an additional 13 pounds. Buyers could still opt for COMAND and a 1,000-watt Bang & Olufsen audio system with 11 speakers, blending extreme performance with rare, road-usable exclusivity.
Of the 132 SLS AMG Black Series that were sold new in the United States, this example is one of just 32 finished in Designo Mystic White (048). Inside, the single-tone Black Series Interior is finished in Black leather with Alcantara seat and trim. The car features the optional Bang & Olufsen audio system, along with the Black Series Telematics Package, which includes integrated navigation and audio system controls. This is in addition to the standard carbon ceramic brakes, carbon fiber accents, and increased downforce, resulting in a total of 137 lbs of weight savings over the standard SLS.
The car remained with Mercedes-Benz USA as part of their press fleet until 2020, when it was sold to its first private owner with only 6,208 miles. Since then, the car has accumulated just over 1,700 miles and currently displays just 7,920 miles at cataloging. In July 2024, at 7,846 miles, the car received a major service by Mercedes-Benz of Henderson, Nevada, which included replacing the front wheel hubs, rear wheel bearings, both Gullwing door struts. At the same time, it received B Service, a set of new Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires, and a four-wheel alignment which totaled nearly $15,000. It should be noted that during removal of the paint protection film, minor cosmetic damage occurred and was professionally repaired by Avio Coach Craft of Los Angeles at a cost of over $22,000.
Truly capturing the spirit of the original 300 SL Gullwing as a raw, uncompromising road-going race car, the SLS AMG Black Series stands as its exhilarating modern interpretation. Offered in rare Designo Mystic White and showing under 8,000 miles from new, this SLS AMG Black Series combines one of AMG's most potent naturally aspirated V8s with track-honed engineering. Recently serviced by Mercedes-Benz and featuring both the Bang & Olufsen system and Black Series Telematics Package, it presents a compelling opportunity to obtain the most visceral expression of the modern Gullwing legacy.
