Introduced in mid-1959, the Mercedes-Benz W111 220 series was a natural progression from the 220S range of 1956, the latter had been the first saloon series from Mercedes-Benz to use unitary construction body shells and this was carried on with its successors, together with all independent suspension and the 2,195cc, single overhead camshaft, straight six engine. All models, however, were larger inside and out with a greater abundance of chrome work and distinctive finned rear wings emphasising the size of the cars.
Four basic models were available, the 105bhp 220, the 124bhp 220 S with twin Solex carburettors, the 134bhp 220 SE with fuel injection and the 170bhp 300 SE with 2,996cc engine. In addition there were the much sleeker, two door 220 SE and 300 SE Coupé and Cabriolet models, sharing sim
