There was a time, somewhere around the turn of the millennium, when Mercedes-Benz decided that a coupé or convertible didn't necessarily have to be a thoroughbred to still look damn good. The W124 had just left the stage, the new generation was in the starting blocks, and gliding right through all that German build-quality bravado came the CLK. A car that didn't announce itself with fireworks, but with quiet self-assurance. The sort of car your neighbour glances at and thinks: that chap is doing something right, but I can't quite put my finger on what.

And then the folks in Stuttgart had one more nice little trick up their sleeve. Because while most CLKs went about their business quite happily with a four-cylinder or a tidy V6, in the top version they calmly crammed a 4.3-litre V8 under the bonnet. No brochure shouting about it, no spoiler giving the game away. Just: a whopper of an engine, hidden inside a body that looked from the outside every bit as neat as the entry-level model. A wolf that had dressed up as a sheep, and never quite got over the joke.

279 bhp from eight cylinders, mated to an automatic that shifts with the discretion of a butler you never saw enter the room. This isn't a car that eggs you on to dive into a hairpin like a lunatic. This is a car for the long haul: cruising with the roof down, one arm draped casually over the door, and that V8 quietly grumbling away in the background until you give it a rather more serious look. And then out comes something that doesn't fit the smart suit at all. A deep, bassy rumble that betrays the fact that beneath all those avantgarde manners there lurks a hefty portion of American muscle.

Right, back to the car in question. This CLK 430 Cabriolet in Avantgarde trim dates from 2001 and wears the finest colour you could wish for on such a car: Bernsteinrot Metallic. Amber red, in other words, a shade that lives and shifts in the sun and still radiates warmth under grey British skies. Combine that with the 17-inch alloy wheels and you have a presence that is stylish everywhere and always, without ever shouting that it's arrived.

And then the story the paperwork tells. Because this has clearly been a car that spent its life on the good days. The convertible as the second, perhaps even third car in the stable, brought out the moment the sun dared to show its face. The annual mileage of recent years is modest, exactly as you'd expect from an enthusiast's convertible. Faithfully through the inspection in Heemskerk, neatly passing its MOT, valid until mid-2026. Not a car that spent its whole existence stuck in traffic, but one that was mostly let out when there was something to enjoy.

The paintwork is clean and tidy across the entire vehicle, the tyres are Goodyears with plenty of tread. Four proper seats, so no selfish two-seater story, but one where you can simply pile in with four and drive off into the summer evening towards the coast. Park it on the seafront at Katwijk and I'll wager more people look at the car than at the sea.

What makes this CLK so appealing is precisely that understatement. Everyone knows the SL, everyone knows the big coupés. But the CLK 430 Cabrio is that quiet force in the range: the V8 you never see coming. The man standing in the corner at a party, saying nothing, and yet the most interesting person in the whole room. For the price of a decent new compact hatchback you're buying eight cylinders of German open-top culture from the dawn of this century. Work out for yourself where more pleasure lies.

This is the car for someone who takes their summer seriously but not themselves.
