Model History

The Mercedes-Benz 300 SL occupies a unique place in automotive history, combining advanced engineering, outstanding performance and timeless design. The model’s origins can be traced to Mercedes-Benz’s successful 300 SL racing car, which achieved international recognition in competition and demonstrated the potential of the company’s innovative lightweight and high-performance engineering.

The 300 SL made its public debut as a production sports car in 1954, initially offered as the legendary Gullwing Coupé. Its distinctive upward-opening doors, spaceframe chassis and direct-injection 3.0-litre six-cylinder engine made it one of the most technically advanced road cars of its era, while its exceptional performance established the 300 SL as a benchmark among high-performance sports cars.

In 1957, Mercedes-Benz introduced the open 300 SL Roadster, replacing the Gullwing and adapting the concept for greater refinement and everyday usability. The Roadster featured a conventional tubular-frame structure around the doors, independent suspension and a revised rear-axle design, while retaining the potent 3.0-litre straight-six engine with mechanical fuel injection. With its elegant open bodywork and improved ride and handling, the Roadster offered a more sophisticated interpretation of the 300 SL concept.

Produced until 1963, the 300 SL Roadster underwent a number of continuous technical and mechanical improvements during its production run. Despite its increased comfort and usability, it remained a genuinely high-performance sports car, capable of combining long-distance touring with remarkable performance and driving involvement.

Today, the 300 SL Roadster is regarded as one of the most significant and desirable Mercedes-Benz models ever produced. Its combination of advanced engineering, elegant proportions, limited production and enduring competition heritage has established it as a cornerstone of the classic car world and one of the most sought-after post-war sports cars among collectors.

About this 300 SL

This particular Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Roadster is an exceptionally attractive and comprehensively restored example, originally delivered to the United States and subsequently returning to Europe, where it underwent an extensive restoration.

The car remained in the United States for more than five decades before being imported to Germany in 2010. Restoration commenced shortly thereafter and was comprehensively carried out between 2012 and 2015. Particular emphasis was placed on authenticity and originality, with original components retained or used wherever possible. The completed work was documented in a detailed report by Mike Ziesemer in 2015 and subsequently assessed in a FIVA report prepared in 2017 by Christian Kramer, a renowned Mercedes-Benz 300 SL specialist.

The car benefits from a particularly interesting ownership history spanning almost seven decades across the United States, Germany and Switzerland. Following its original delivery to the United States, it remained in American ownership from 1957 to 2010, passing from Mr Friedmann in Florida (1957–1994), to Mr Maison in Ohio (1994–2001), and subsequently to Mr Durda in Alabama (2001–2010). In 2010, the 300 SL was acquired by Mr Erck in Germany, who retained the car until 2014, before passing into the ownership of Mr Walter, also in Germany (2014–2016). The car subsequently moved to Switzerland, where it was owned by Mr Haupt from 2016 to 2023 and has been in the ownership of the current owner since 2023. This documented succession of ownership provides the car with a compelling international provenance, tracing its history from its early years in the United States through Germany and into Switzerland.

Finished in the timeless and highly desirable original delivery combination of black over red, the car presents with the elegant and purposeful appearance characteristic of the 300 SL Roadster. It is accompanied by both its soft-top and hardtop, allowing the car to be enjoyed in either open or closed configuration.

Importantly, the car retains its matching-numbers engine and drivetrain, further enhancing its desirability from a collector's perspective. Together with its comprehensive restoration and supporting documentation, this provides a strong foundation for the car's originality and authenticity.

Following its restoration in Germany, the 300 SL subsequently made its way to Switzerland, where it has since remained in private ownership. Today, it presents as a highly attractive and carefully restored example of one of Mercedes-Benz's most significant post-war automobiles.

Combining its original US delivery, comprehensive restoration, matching-numbers drivetrain, striking black-over-red colour combination and both soft-top and hardtop, this 300 SL Roadster represents a particularly compelling example of this iconic Mercedes-Benz and an excellent addition to any significant collection.
