This is a largely preserved and original 1971 Maserati Indy 4.2 (Tipo: AM116) which has been owned by our collector client for the past 20 years. The owner is a longtime collector in North Hollywood and has enjoyed an interesting collection of significant cars.
The aesthetic of the Indy is considered by many to be an acquired taste. Designed by Virginio Vairo at Vignale, this Indy is the 552th example produced (1142 in total), and 1 of only 436 4.2 liter Indy's ever made. The early history of this Maserati is largely unknown. We do have reason to believe that this was a European delivery car which later found its way to the States. We say this as all the instrumentation and units of measurement are in metric. US delivery vehicles, also called "Indy America," would have had imperial measurements.
The current owner was able to share with us the following:
In the late 1990's, the now previous owner had inherited the car from his father. It is understood that once this car entered the United States, it spent a majority of its time in Sacramento, CA, before arriving in Los Angels. Now in possession of its current owner, this Indy has remained in covered parking in North Hollywood ever since.
This Indy has an older repaint in an attractive Smoke Quartz (224,652). The paint is in very acceptable condition, with good to very good depth and shine. There are, of course, swirl marks, scratches, and small paint chips found throughout the vehicle. However, one must look closely to spot the imperfections, as this paint color is very forgiving. The chrome work is overall in good condition, with lots of shine and minimal imperfections. The badging on the front and rear emblems are presentable, but showing age. Likewise, the 14 inch wheels are showing signs of age. The same is true for the tires, we would recommend the next owner replace them. Lastly, as should be apparent in the photos, there is some impact damage to the front bumper. We were told it was purely cosmetic, but do not have any further details.
The interior is a mix of some very well preserved original features and some long ago new items. Overall, there are many areas of the interior that are showing significant wear and/or age. The attractive, but cracking red leather seats are supportive and comfortable. We did not notice any signs of significant wear or warping in the cushions, but the leather will have to be replaced, at least in the front. The dash, headliner, steering wheel, and gauges are overall good to very good; they present well and are free of any major blemishes. The carpeting, weather stripping, door jambs, and shelf behind the rear seats, gearshift boot, however, do require attention. These components are either worn, stained, or otherwise in less than stellar condition.
Mechanically, this Maserati is in good running condition. We performed a brief test-drive around the neighborhood and we were overall satisfied. The car started right up, ran and idled smoothly, the transmission shifted into gear with ease, and the brakes felt solid. The engine, as would be expected, sounded fantastic and pulled strong. All the gauges worked, the steering felt correct, and overall provided a pleasant and engaging driving experience.
This Indy has been somewhat well cared for, and its overall condition has improved with a recent major service. Many of the finicky electronic issues that can plague these cars, particular as it relates to window switches, ignition timing, etc., have largely been sorted. The odometer states 73,442km (45,634 miles) and is believed to be original. That said, we would recommend that the next owner do a full fluid flush on this car before a longer drive.
Overall, we found this to be a very charismatic Indy which would likely draw attention at a local car show. It also has the potential to be a very fun touring car with a small amount of work.
Details about this Indy's condition are included in the 158-point inspection report which is published as part of this listing. This car is located in North Hollywood, CA.
