The Jaguar XJ is the original fast executive saloon. Launched in 1968 at the Paris Motor Show the XJ (classified as eXperimental Jaguar) was an instant hit and was named ‘Car of the Year’ by Car Magazine. Riding high from the great success of the E-type which was now going into Series 2 production, Sir William Lyons wanted to create a saloon car with the handling and power of the E-type; the XJ series was the result of that vision. The Jaguar XJ was at first offered only with a 6-cylinder engine before this 5.3 litre 12-cylinder version was introduced in July 1972.
At the time, the Jaguar XJ12 was the only 12-cylinder 4-door car and was the fastest saloon available, capable of ‘around 140mph’. In addition, a limited run of only 754 extended wheelbase version cars were built of which this car is one, guaranteeing rarity and future value. Furthermore, this car was one of the very last series I Jaguar XJ12s produced, as the facelifted series II entered production in the autumn of 1973 but the series I remains the more collectible model.
This 1973 Jaguar XJ12 for sale is in fantastic condition with original, body and paintwork. The interior presents very well with lovely light patina, all electrics are tested as working and the V12 starts first time. A large amount of history is available with the car and the file shows that a some £20,000 was spent on mechanical restoration in the early 2000s to get the car in top driving condition and the car has had little use since then. The original toolkit also comes with the car.
