• Building on the success of the Sierra Cosworth, Ford transplanted much of the Sierra’s running gear into the more compact Mk5 Escort shell, with the hope of winning the WRC
• To homologate the car under 'Group A' regulations, a minimum of 2,500 road-going examples of the car had to be produced, so Ford’s SVO operation set about incorporating the Cosworth YBT 2-litre, 224bhp (227PS) four-cylinder turbocharged engine and 5-speed, four-wheel drive transmission into the as-yet unreleased Mk5 Escort
