A dramatic departure from the outgoing 275 GTB, Ferrari’s new 365 GTB/4 Berlinetta took the world by storm at the 1968 Paris Salon. Angular and aggressive compared to the more voluptuous 275 GTB, the 365 GTB/4 stayed true to Ferrari’s formula of front-engined, V-12 grand tourers with amazing performance, at a time when many manufacturers were experimenting with mid-engine design.

With 352 bhp on tap, the 365 GTB/4 certainly did not disappoint. It could sprint to 60 mph from a standstill in 5.4 seconds, with an incredible top speed of 174 mph. This was a touch faster than Lamborghini’s Miura P400, making this new Ferrari the fastest production car in the world at the time. Considering its exceptional performance and in celebration of Ferrari’s historic 1-2-3 finish at the 24 Hours of Daytona in 1967, the 365 GTB/4 quickly earned the nickname “Daytona” by the press and automotive enthusiasts alike.

Produced in October of 1970 and delivered new into Canada through official importer George Woolley. According to a photocopy of the original warranty card in the history file, it was originally delivered to a Jean Pierre Forgel, residing just outside Montreal. Originally finished in Grigio Ferro (106-E-8), the Daytona does retain its original interior, trimmed in Rosso (VM 893) leather with black inserts. In 1990, Quebecois owner Laurent LeMairre offered chassis 13827 for sale in volume 15 of Ferrari Market Letter. History documents on file show the Ferrari entering Switzerland in January of 1991.

In 1997, chassis 13827 was purchased by Mr. Richoz, who immediately began a series of repairs. Invoices on file from November of that year in excess of CHF 16,804 detail the complete dismantling of the engine for cleaning, removal and replacement of a damaged piston, and reassembly. In 2005, repairs to the body work included repairs to both rear wings and new paint on the boot and rear skirt.

Fitted with its original engine and a replacement gearbox, this 1970 Ferrari 365 GTB/4 Daytona comes with owner manuals and a Ferrari tool roll. To view this car and others currently consigned to this auction, please visit the RM website at rmsothebys.com/en/auctions/0420.
