The Model: Prior to the introduction of the Pantera to America, few had ever heard of De-Tomaso. Those who were serious students of sports car knew about the Mangusta, but this new Pantera was worlds ahead of that car. Based on a full metal monocoque design, it was a new concept for this small Modena based company. The car made its debut in its hometown in March 1970, followed by its American preview in New York. Aiming at the American market, helped along with a marketing agreement from Ford Motor Company, the Pantera not only had performance but amenities usually deemed as unnecessary for the European market. Powered by the Ford Cleveland 351 cid V8, they were fast with excellent handling and braking response. Tjaarda’s design was flawless and while interiors were tight they were comfortable. Pantera would remain in production for over 20 years up to 1992.

The Car: This Pantera’s Cleveland V8 is topped off by a Holley 4barrel carburetor as supplied from the factory, as a gated shifter allows for an easy transition from gear to gear in the ZF transmission. Receiving a full restoration in 1990 from Panteras by Wilkinson, its body is tight and sound and equipped with Koni adjustable shocks, upgraded AM/FM CD sound system, Autometer Gauges, 4point racing safety belts, Lecarra steering wheels and the proper 15” Campagnola wheels. Very well documented with receipts dating back to the 1980’s, this Pantera has rarely been let out of its cage. Today showing just under 87,000 miles, it’s a perfect International blend of Italian craftsmanship for the body and suspension, with a legendary American power plant, with a German transmission for fun. It looks to be showfield ready, but we are hoping that the new owner can experience the thrill of a great sports car.
