Documented records tell us that this superb cabriolet was bodied by Chapron according to order n°8528 and production n° 454. Pearl grey in color with Bordeaux upholstery, it was intended for export and was delivered to Citroën on 12 June 1963 by the coachbuilder. Sold new in Mayenne and registered for the first time on 5 July 1963, in the name of Suzanne Bonneport, it remained with her until 1998! It was then acquired by a Dutch collector, who has kept it ever since. In 1998, he restored the car, carried out by one of the Gé Bentvelsen brothers who worked all his life at Citroën, then in the restoration company of Bart Holland. Then, in 2019 and 2020, a bodywork restoration was carried out by François Vendelbos while retaining the beautifully patinated original wine-red leather interior. On 8 October 2009, the car passed from one brother to another, while remaining in the same family.
This is an authentic DS 19 cabriolet, a model whose production was subcontracted by the manufacturer to coachbuilder Henri Chapron. It is a version with a hydraulic system (gearbox, brakes, suspension, direction), this one having been converted to the green liquid (LHM) for reasons of ease of use. The car is presented in its original colors and is in good condition, except for a few details: the head restraints are from a later model (after 1969) and the wheel covers correspond to a 1965 model.
The DS is a kind of UFO in the automotive landscape of the 50s and 60s, its shape, designed by Flaminio Bertoni, evokes a vehicle of the future. Today, it still represents an avant-garde vision, which was already concerned with aerodynamics to promote fuel consumption and top speed. In the cabriolet version, it adds driving pleasure and offers for five/six people (as indicated on the first French registration document) a way to drive in absolute comfort, thanks to its extraordinary oleo-pneumatic suspension, while enjoying the sun rays. The DS cabriolet is so attractive that replicas are frequent, which makes an authentic example all the more desirable. This is the case with this one, which has the advantage of having known only two families in its life and of having been treated with great care. An easily usable car, it can take its future owner and his family for a ride, or even on a more ambitious trip across the continent.
