From the introduction of the Eldorado in 1953, Cadillac realised the marketing importance of changing the appearance, specification and performance of its models every year. The psychology of this was to make every year’s new model seem much more appealing than the last, with the hope that affluent, image-conscious buyers would acquire a new car every year. In this respect, Cadillac was one of the protagonists of moving the western world from post-war austerity to the conspicuous consumerism of the 1960s. Ownership of a new Cadillac in America meant that you had ‘arrived’.
