The BMW Isetta is without a doubt one of the most remarkable chapters in European motoring history. During the 1950s and early 1960s, BMW found itself in stormy waters. The marque was searching for a compact, affordable mobility solution for post-war Europe. That solution arrived in the shape of the Isetta: a microcar originally designed by the Italian firm Iso, but technically developed and perfected by BMW.

The BMW Isetta 300, such as this March 1962 example, received an air-cooled single-cylinder engine drawn from BMW's motorcycle programme. With its characteristic front-opening door, bubble-shaped body and minimalist engineering, the Isetta quickly became a symbol of efficiency and ingenuity. Between 1955 and 1962, BMW produced more than 160,000 Isettas, a model that quite literally secured the marque's survival. Today, the Isetta has grown into a highly sought-after collector's item and an absolute crowd favourite at events.
