3.0 CSL No. 28
Officially established in 1972, BMW Motorsport made an immediate impact, winning the European Touring Car Championship the following year and five more times before the decade's end with its inaugural racing project: the legendary 3.0 CSL. Fifty years later, to mark BMW M's 50th anniversary, BMW revived the full 3.0 CSL name and concept with a limited production run of just 50 serialized examples; conceived as a modern interpretation of the celebrated 1970s homologation special.
Faithful to the original Coupé, Sport, Leichtbau formula, the 2023 3.0 CSL featured an evocative, carbon-fiber body inspired by the E9's famed "Batmobile" aero kit, and boasted a dry weight of approximately 1,624 kilograms. Its uprated 3.0-liter TwinPower inline-six now produced 560 horsepower-the most powerful inline-six yet fitted in a road-legal BMW M car-sent exclusively to the rear wheels via a ZF six-speed manual transmission with Active M differential. Model-specific suspension tuning, M Carbon ceramic brakes, and gold-colored center-locking forged alloy wheels further added to its extensive performance arsenal.
Despite such a limited production run, BMW subjected the 3.0 CSL to a comprehensive series-development program including dedicated aerodynamic development and crash testing. Carbon fiber was used across virtually all body sections, with many components produced in limited series, largely by hand and assembled in a dedicated craft workshop, with the assembly process taking up to 10 days.
Each example was finished in Alpine White with hand-applied BMW M heritage tricolor stripes, and the number 50 was incorporated throughout the car to signify BMW M's 50th anniversary, even appearing on its specially developed Michelin tires.
Its purist interior, enhanced with M Carbon bucket seats with Black Alcantara upholstery and covered in carbon fiber, further boasted several unique touches; highlighted by its 3.0 CSL-exclusive shift knob, sequential number on the passenger side dash, and 3.0 CSL badges throughout the cockpit. Following the 3.0 CSL Hommage concept car unveiled in 2015, the production 3.0 CSL debuted in November 2022 and was subsequently showcased at Villa d'Este in 2023, where it was displayed alongside an original 1973 CSL.
This 2023 BMW 3.0 CSL is the 28th of just 50 examples produced and was delivered new to former Formula One driver Nick Heidfeld. During BMW's four-season works-team era as a Formula One constructor, Heidfeld contested 70 Grands Prix and remains the team's record-holder for both starts and World Championship points. His wider Formula One career included 13 podium finishes, while his later endurance-racing career included a class win at the 2014 24 Hours of Le Mans with Swiss team Rebellion Racing.
Heidfeld first attended an event where the 3.0 CSL was presented in May 2023 during a BMW Motorsport event at the Autodromo Nazionale Monza. After taking delivery of his own CSL the following month, Heidfeld attended a BMW-hosted event with the car at Zürich's Dolder Grand.
Exclusively garage-kept in Switzerland throughout Heidfeld's ownership, the car has covered just 391 kilometers from new. It has received two services at authorized BMW M dealership Sepp Fässler AG in Wil, Switzerland, most recently in August 2026 where it underwent an oil change and brake fluid service.
Today this example is accompanied by a trove of exclusive delivery items befitting such a rare BMW. Included are a number of items with the same 28/50 matching serial number as the car, such as an official BMW 1:18 model car, car cover in 3.0 CSL-branded bag, 3.0 CSL-branded leather folio with owner's manuals, and a framed 3.0 CSL design sketch on canvas autographed by BMW M Creative Director Viktor Bär -which is still preserved in its packaging. Two stunning official BMW hardcover books are included: "BMW M Love" and a 260-page BMW 3.0 CSL book published by BMW M GmbH and limited to 50 units; number-matched of course to each CSL. It is also supplied with two keys and a personalized presentation box with several accompanying items presented to Heidfeld at the Monza reveal event by BMW Design Director Adrian van Hooydonk.
It is fitting that this 2023 BMW 3.0 CSL should return to the Dolder Grand three years later to welcome its next custodian. Offered with exceedingly low mileage, a plethora of unique commemorative items, and from the care of renowned BMW Sauber Formula One driver Nick Heidfeld, there are few better ways to celebrate 50 years of BMW M than with this exceedingly rare 3.0 CSL in one's collection.
