Beschreibung

The BMW 2002 Turbo was launched at the 1973 Frankfurt Motor Show, and it was quite a sensation. It was BMW's first turbocharged production car and one of the very the first turbocharged cars available for road use. The blown engine produced 170 bhp at 5,800 rpm and 240 Nm of torque. It was basically a 2002 tii engine with a KKK turbocharger and a compression ratio of 6.9:1 in order to prevent engine knocking. The Kugelfischer mechanical fuel injection from the 2002 tii remained but received an integrated boost enrichment feature. Unfortunately, the 2002 Turbo was introduced just before the 1973 oil crisis, and this was probably the main reason that only 1672 examples were built. Today, it is the most sought after version from the fantastic '02' range, and a proper collectors item.

The example we are offering for sale was delivered new on 06.06.1974 to the German first owner, and supplied via Autohaus Alfred Wörner - BMW-dealership in Schwäbisch-Gmünd. It had some interesting options from new, like a metal sunroof and aluminium wheels. The car also has fantastic and period correct Recaro seats with the typical and rare "fishnet" headrests. The engine runs beautifully, and the gearbox is a delight to use. Driving this nimble M3 predecessor is a real pleasure and it is hard to believe that this machine is now almost 45 years old... The body has been repainted many years ago, but there are no sign of rust or repairs and measuring the paint thickness only confirmed that this is a very sound car without any signs of filler or dodgy repairs. The interior appears to be in completely original condition, although the excellent Recaro leather front seats may be a period after market installation but completely fitting this car. The Turbo comes with a BMW Classic Zertifikat confirming it is all matching nrs and indeed a proper factory Turbo. This great BMW 2002 Turbo still has a German registration and is ready for immediate fun.
