In 2001 Bentley launched a special edition of the Continental destined for the North American market and named internally R 420. Technically the car was identical to the Continental R Mulliner and boasted a turbocharged 6.75 litre V8 engine delivering 420 hp but was adapted to American tastes with a special interior including a special aluminium gear knob and a plaque indicating the very exclusive 420 Series. The engines were reportedly “tweaked” for a real output closer to 450 than the 420 officially specified and the performance is markedly different from other models. With a new prize north of 500’000 francs, a certain exclusivity was guaranteed and only 18 examples were finally built. Our example with the number one was delivered to Euro Motorcars in Bethesda/Maryland and first registered on the 10th of May 2001. After two further owners in Florida and Idaho the Bentley was taken over by the vendor in January 2013 with then 9’300 kilometres showing. After importation into Switzerland, the Continental was adapted to the Swiss norms for around 11’000 francs, including the mandatory noise and emission tests. In July 2013, the car was MOT’d for the first time. Since then, the R 420 has been used regularly and always thoroughly maintained. In June 2023, among other things, new tyres were mounted, the steering overhauled and the automatic gearbox was serviced. Maintenance receipts exceeding 40’000 Swiss francs are available and will be handed over with the car. Currently this exceedingly rare Bentley has covered a mere 28’000 kilometres and is in very good and extraordinary well-maintained original condition. The last MOT was completed in August 2023 allowing immediate registration for the new owner.
