Overview
As England and North America both benefited from the growth of the UK cottage industry sports car development, the Austin Healey 3000 reached the pinnacle of development with the Mark III. The US was particularly enamored, placing orders for more than 90 percent of total production, Meanwhile, all over Europe, these cars continued to record win after win, long after production had ceased in 1967. Wonderfully appointed and powered by a robust 6-cylinder engine with multiple carburetion, the final iteration of the "Big Healey" (also known as the Phase 2) achieved 150 bhp via a new higher lift camshaft and SU HD8 carburetors. Power assisted brakes were also added as was a new dashboard with prominent instrumentation.
This LHD North American Export example was dispatched form the factory in August 1966 and delivered to the Philadelphia, Pennsylvania dealer where it was sold to the first owner. Originally finished in Black with red trim, this Healey was outfitted with wire wheels, heater, adjustable steering column, laminated windscreen, overdrive, octagonal wheel nuts, and a black tonneau cover. Though much of the earlier years of ownership are not known, Invoices accompanying this car date back to 2008 in Redding, PA indicating the car likely remained on the east coast. By 2013 a comprehensive restoration was underway covering all aspects of the car complete with body work, rust repair, engine rebuild with dyno testing, 5-speed transmission conversion with performance clutch and lightened flywheel, complete interior in leather, new carpet, all new chrome, Hendrix wheel treatment, all new wiring, rebuilt suspension, brakes, and numerous other details. After completion, the car was enjoyed by the owner and subsequently sold to the current owner in 2016. The current owner, a Seattle resident, has since engaged BritSport to tend to the car with fastidious regularity. As a result, every aspect of the car is both beautifully presented and mechanically prepared for the next fortunate owner.
Finished in beautiful two-tone colors, the stunning condition of this Austin Healey continues to impress both cosmetically and mechanically. The paint has been carefully applied with excellent gloss, smooth coverage, and deep luster. The body and trim display excellent detailing throughout the chrome accents, emblems, and design features. The chrome is mirror fresh, lighting and lenses are superb, and the overall composition is consistently fine. The body integrity is excellent with excellent shut lines and tight closures on both doors, trunk, and bonnet. Wearing a set of beautifully finished chrome wire wheels with dual ear knockoffs, the sporting nature of this low-slung roadster is ready for enjoyable driving, shows, and Austin Healey club events.
The interior is in excellent condition having been thoughtfully and expertly reupholstered with deep blue leather and trimmed with tight seat piping, proper padding, and excellent quality carpeting. The blue canvas convertible top raises and lowers smoothly by hand, and latches confidently at the windshield. When stowed in the down position, a matching canvas boot covers the top. Behind the wood rim steering wheel, a pristine lacquered wood dashboard is lined with Instruments and switches including meticulously detailed sporty dial faces. Fit, finish, and attention to detail continues to be evident even when inspecting the underside electrical wiring behind the dashboard, which reveals proper wiring, correct finishes, and factory correct hardware - all hallmarks of the same quality workmanship found in National level concours winners. The trunk area has been equally detailed and properly finished with correct materials including a full-sized chrome plated spare wire wheel flanked by the 12V battery.
Much like the exterior and interior, the engine compartment is beautifully prepared with attention to detail offering modest upgrades and polished finishes for added visual impact, The valve cover and carburetors are polished to a high level, the correct yellow fan and red shroud cover are properly in place, and the engine is finished with the correct light metallic green, a hallmark of Austin Healey engines.
As one might expect, the undercarriage is also in excellent condition, with all structural panels, frame members, and suspension mounting points appearing as new. Impeccable attention to detail including excellent finishes are evident at every corner including the cast oil pan, shock absorbers, differential, brakes, and linkages. All finishes and components viewed in the undercarriage appear fresh including stainless-steel exhaust, fabric wound wiring, new hard lines, suspension rubber, and hardware.
In addition to the beautiful cosmetic condition, this Mark III roadster runs and drives very well. The current owner has not only been meticulous with cosmetic care, they have ensured that the driving qualities are in keeping with the remarkable visual standards. The engine offers progressive power and torque and pulls strong in all gears benefiting from the upgraded 5-speed manual transmission. The car accelerates to freeway speeds with no cowl shudder or hesitation under load. At higher speeds this Healey tracks well, brakes predictably, and drives confidently in modern traffic.
Accompanying the car are recent records for mechanical service, reference information from the restoration, and the British Heritage Trust Certificate issued in 2015.
Austin Healey 3000 Mk IIIs continued to be sought after for their sporting design and delightful driving manners. Rarely seen with such a superlative restoration, this final year phase 2 series example offers the next fortunate owner a wonderful opportunity to enjoy one of the finest British sports cars ever built.
