‘When the products which are raced bear such a close resemblance to those which can be bought by the public, as do those of Aston Martin, only the most biased can deny the value of racing in improving the breed. It should be no surprise (that the DB4) should be based on an engine which first appeared in experimental form in some of last year’s races.’ – The Autocar, 3rd October 1958

At its launch in October 1958, the DB4 was the first Aston Martin to carry Carrozzeria Touring’s ‘Superleggera’ bodywork, in which light alloy panels were fixed to a framework of light-gauge steel tubes welded to a platform chassis.

Although styled by Touring, the DB4’s gorgeous fastback coachwork was built under license at Newport Pagnell by Aston Martin, which employed some of the finest panel beaters in the industry.

The new engine was a rugged, alloy, 3,670-cc DOHC six-cylinder fitted with twin SU HD8 carburettors and capable of producing approximately 240 bhp at 5,500 rpm.

Thanks to a maximum speed of 140 mph and a dash to 60 mph in under nine seconds, the DB4 was immediately one of the fastest cars on the market.

Over a five-year production run the DB4’s design was continually changed both cosmetically and mechanically. The early DB4s, are distinguishable by the back-hinged bonnet and lack of window frames or bumper over-riders.

These very early cars are considered the most beautiful and original of the series.

ABOUT THIS SPECIFIC EXAMPLE

This example is the 78th DB4 made. This DB4 is a very rare and desirable first series with no window frames. Approximately 149 first series cars.

Its accompanying copy of the factory build sheet states that the original purchaser was Mr B Carlaw of Messrs Carlaw (Cars) Ltd, Glasgow.

The car was delivered in the same color as the car has nowadays. Elusive Blue with Red Connolly hide interior trim.

The second owner was Denton Gilbert, in July 1983.

In 1985 the car was purchased by Ian H Moss.

Ian H Moss fitted a replacement DB4 engine in December 1985 (invoice on file).

In 1986 a new owner bought the DB4 and started a restoration on the suspension and the brakes.

The project stopped when the owner went to work overseas, and the car has been kept in dry storage for approximately 30 years.

In 2013 the Aston found a new owner. During his ownership the car underwent a complete body off nut and bold restoration at Classic Car Service in Belgium. We know this company very well and have had several cars which have been restored by this company. The level of restoration is extremely high and goes very deep into details.

A total amount of € 397.500,- euro’s was spent during the restoration to make the Aston in it’s current high quality condition.

The restoration started in 2017 and was completed in December 2019.

A restoration book which comes with the car show all the steps of the restoration. This book also clearly shows that every part has been taken apart and has been restored.

This DB4 is in a terrific and outstanding condition. The level of restoration can be best described as pristine / contours.

No money and time has been spared to bring this DB4 in it’s current outstanding condition.

CONDITION EXTERIOR

Having been restored at 1 of the best restoration companies in Belgium this car is in an absolute excellent condition. The appearance of the car is beautiful and from a distance one can clearly see that this is a very impressive example.

The body is absolutely stunning with very straight panels and perfect panel fits / gaps.

The chrome is superb restored and has a beautiful shine. During the restoration, the windows have been renewed and they are without any scratches, damages or signs of use.

Also the headlamps and lenses are all in exceptional condition with virtually no imperfections.

CONDITION INTERIOR

The interior of the DB4 is in equally impressive condition. The Red leather seats are in a brand new condition and don’t show any signs of use even as the carpets, doortrims and headlining.

All key items in the interior such as the dashboard, the meters, gauges, knobs, emblems, window handles, steering wheel etc. are in a beautiful and high quality restored condition.

UNDERNEATH CONDITION / ENGINE BAY / BOOT

Because of the impressive restoration the entire car including the underpart, engine bay and boot are in a impressively nice/top restored condition.

DRIVING EXPERIENCE

Driving an Aston Martin DB 4 is something special. The response on the street is very nice. It seems as everybody becomes a classic car enthusiast as many people show their enthusiasm about the car. This is not strange because the looks of the DB4 are fabulous.

For the continent it is off-course a huge advantage that this Aston is a left hand drive example. But amongst this advantage, the amount of left hand drive cars made by Aston Martin is rather low which results in a huge demand for these cars.

This early Series I, in its purest form, with the desirable frameless doors and lack of bumper over-riders, along with rear-hinged bonnet, is considered by many to be the most beautiful of the DB4 range with its’ egg-crate front grille, larger bonnet scoop, and straight cathedral taillights, all part of the original Touring of Milan design.
