Beschreibung
"With the introduction of the ‘2+2’ DB2/4 in October 1953, Aston Martin extended the DB2’s appeal to the hitherto untapped yet increasingly important market consisting of ‘sports car enthusiasts with a family’. Modifications to the rear of the chassis plus a reduction in fuel tank capacity from 19 to 17 gallons liberated sufficient space within the existing design for two child-sized occasional rear seats. Alternatively, the rear seat backs could be folded down, thus creating a load-carrying platform that more than doubled the luggage space. The latter could be accessed via the 2/4’s opening rear door, a pioneering example of the now commonplace ‘hatchback’ concept. ‘This transformation gives the Aston Martin DB2/4 an unrivalled luggage-carrying capacity in a car which should be capable in favourable circumstances of achieving two miles a minute,’ reported The Motor. Standard specification included the 2.6 litre straight-six engine, the DB2/4 was one of the fastest cars at the time built in Great Britain – with 100mph achievable in third gear and around 120mph maximum – possessing impeccable handling plus a level of comfort rare in any high-performance car.
Owned by the vendor since 2006 this original UK supplied righthand drive example has had an interesting life. The vendor is based in Hong Kong and the car resided there with him for nine years, therefore this DB2/4 benefits from having both UK and Hong Kong registration, the current registration mark of RNP 899 has been on the car since first registration in 1956. Restored in 1995 and having covered only 23,383 miles since, the car still presents in good order today. The engine was fully rebuilt at the time of the restoration and the car painted in British Racing Green, the grey leather trim was also renewed at the same time; fast forward 25 years and the car has a delightful soft patina to it. The DB2/4 Mk. II is by far the rarest of the variants with only 199 manufactured of which 146 were saloons. However, the majority of these would have been built in lefthand drive format thus making this example very rare indeed. Supplied with four large history folders, the vendor carried on the tradition of looking after this car exceedingly well with a no expense spared attitude. During his ownership the car has had a dual exhaust system fitted raising the output by 16bhp, rebuilt the carburettors and renewed most of the fuel system including positive earth fuel pumps. The suspension front and rear has been overhauled, as has the steering box and brakes, a new clutch has also been fitted. This is an opportunity to purchase a much loved and perfectly useable DB2/4 Mk. II.
The health and safety of both our customers and team remains the utmost priority, we are therefore operating to Government guidelines throughout viewing and auction day."
