Overview
The Alfa Romeo SZ – short for Sprint Zagato – is one of the boldest and most polarising designs to emerge from Italy in the 1990s. Internally codenamed ES30, the SZ was developed as an experimental sports car, borrowing its chassis and drivetrain from the Alfa 75 but encasing it in an outrageous composite shell.
Unveiled at the 1989 Geneva Motor Show, the SZ was immediately nicknamed “Il Mostro” – The Monster – for its aggressive lines and striking six-eyed front. Designed by Robert Opron at Centro Stile Fiat and hand-built by Zagato, the car embodies a true fusion of engineering and design bravery.
Beneath the skin, the SZ packs a soulful 3.0L V6 Busso engine – tuned to deliver 209 hp and a distinctive howl – mounted at the front but delivering power exclusively to the rear wheels. The short wheelbase, advanced suspension (derived from the 75 Turbo Evoluzione), and firm damping offer a driving experience far sharper than its exotic proportions may suggest.
History
This particular SZ was delivered new in 1991 and has been immaculately preserved since. One of just over a thousand ever produced, it retains its original colour combination and exhibits all the hallmarks of Alfa Romeo’s analog golden age. Used sparingly and cared for by marque specialists, the car is offered with its original books, service documentation, and ownership file.
