History:
The Alfa Romeo 6C 2500 had been the last car of the series to be produced before the Second World War, so in 1946, in the Portello factory (half destroyed by the bombing), it was the first to go into production, followed by the Turismo, Sport and Super Sport versions. Indeed, the chassis of the 250 in its post-war version (with independent Porsche-type rear axle) was among the most advanced in the world and certainly better than what was offered by the then young Ferrari.
The way the bodywork was fitted also changed: it was no longer bolted but welded to the chassis rails, an innovation introduced by the &C 2500 "Freccia d'Oro", a new 4/5-seater coupé, featuring modern "hatchback" styling with a rounded rear end (nicknamed Gobbone).
The "Freccia d'oro" was assembled by Carrozzeria Alfa, the forerunner of the Alfa Romeo Style Centre, and was equipped with a 90 hp engine that enabled it to achieve a speed of 155 km/h. Their success in motor sport competitions was almost taken for granted, thanks in part to their proverbial reliability. No less than two 6C "Golden Arrows" took part in the 1950 Carrera Panamericana, Taruffi's No. 90 and Bonini-Bonetto's No. 103. From 1947 to 1950, 2,500 units were produced, of which only 680 were "Freccia d'Oro".
The car is being offered at auction.
It is now restored in a conservative manner in a beautiful red colour with an original cream interior.
The dashboard is perfectly preserved and the instrumentation is fully functional.
The engine is kept in excellent working order thanks to overhauls by brand experts. Original Alfa Romeo spoked wheels, new tyres.
In 1974 the car was repainted in black to be used for the filming of the movie "Last Days of Mussolini" directed by Carlo Lizzani, with Rod Steiger as Benito Mussolini, Franco Nero, Henry Fonda and Lisa Gastoni as Claretta Petacci. On this occasion, the first number plate was hidden, as it had a more recent numbering than the number plates of the time of the historical reconstruction.
The chassis is OK, the engine is the exact type of the 1946 Freccia d'Oro production.
This model is still today a true style icon that continues to "attract" numerous collectors to join in historical revivals or to keep it jealously in their garage. It is a legend because it ranks among the most beautiful cars of all time, because it represents the last chapter of one of the most prestigious Alfa Romeo and, finally, because it remains one of the most valued Alfa Romeo road cars.
