  • A beautifully presented example of Alfa Romeo’s flagship grand tourer
  • One of 6,999 Giorgetto Giugiaro-styled 2600 Sprint variants produced
  • Wears its original Italian registration “AV 72797”
  • Restoration completed in 2022 at a cost of more than €45,000; invoices available to view on file

First revealed at the 1962 Geneva International Motor Show, Alfa Romeo’s 2600 model range only reinforced the Italian marque’s reputation for making achingly pretty sports cars. Notably the final Alfa Romeo to feature an inline six-cylinder engine with twin-overhead camshafts—a signature configuration since the 1920s—the car succeeded the earlier 2000 as the marque’s flagship model. The 2600 was available in one of three body configurations; in Berlina, Spider, or Sprint form. Later revisions to the design plan were introduced in limited numbers, including the 2600 Sprint Zagato and De Luxe.

Never produced in large numbers, the 2600 delivered a wonderful blend of characteristically Italian design and spirited driving dynamics for its discerning buyers, with a touch over 11,000 examples made across all body styles. The Sprint became the most popular version of the 2600, as a grand touring coupé, though only 6,999 were made. The 2600 Sprint, with its coachwork by Bertone, could seat four adults and offer a practical amount of stowage space. While it compromised a modicum of signature Alfa Romeo agility and lightness, it more than made up for it with the stability and smoother ride of a larger car, while still being able to accelerate to faster speeds. The Sprint’s 145 brake horsepower-rated engine laid claim to a top speed of 200 km/h.

The example offered here was completed by Alfa Romeo’s Portello factory on 30 June 1964, according to the car’s accompanying build sheet issued by Museo Storico Alfa Romeo. It was finished in Visione over a Beige interior, and destined for the Naples region. As documented by the car’s accompanying “book-style” libretto, the Alfa Romeo was first registered in the Avellino province of Italy, around 50 kilometres east of Naples, wearing the registration “AV 72797”—for which it still is still fitted with its Italian registration plates. After joining The Iseli Collection, the car embarked on a restoration at a workshop in the province of Brescia. Costs exceeded €45,000 and invoices can be seen in history file.

Exuding 1960s Alfa Romeo charm in equal measure as its rarity, this delightful 2600 Sprint presents in fine condition and will be an extremely tempting proposition for any enthusiast of Italian cars.
