The Rolex Daytona with calibre Zenith El Primero (modified) was launched in 1988 with reference 16520.
It had a large 40 mm case according to the standards of the time with crown protectors and sapphire glass.
It also featured the Calibre 400 movement, Zenith El Primero, renamed the Rolex 4030 calibre, which was the first Daytona with an automatic chronograph calibre and the only stainless steel model with a chronometric certification.
As a result, Rolex added the words Oyster Perpetual to its dial.
