Peu connue en Europe, la marque Studebaker est pourtant l’un des pionniers de l’automobile aux Etats-Unis. Les premières voitures sont produites en 1902 et la marque s’arrêtera en 1966, faute de moyens à investir en recherche et développement. De nombreux modèles verront le jour entretemps, et parmi eux la Champion, dont la première version sortira des chaînes de production en 1939. Au total, cinq génération de Studebaker Champion seront successivement fabriquées jusqu’en 1958, déclinées dans toutes les versions de carrosseries. Propulsées par un 6-cylindre en ligne puis par un V8 de 4,7 l à la fin de sa carrière, la Studebaker n’est pas une voiture destinée à la compétition. Et pourtant… En 1954, un équipage turc participa au Tour de France automobile et bien plus tard à la fin des années 1980, la Studebaker Coupé Champion deviendra la voiture star de la célèbre Carrera Panamericana qu’elle remportera à plusieurs reprises et encore de nos jours.

Le coupé Champion qui vous est présenté ici affiche une histoire intéressante. Distribuée en France par l’importateur Emile Dujardin, la marque Studebaker reste cependant assez confidentielle. Peu d’exemplaires furent importés et rares sont ceux qui subsistent à ce jour. Celui-ci est bien l’un d’entre eux, immatriculé dans l’Hérault en 1954. Ce coupé champion restera la propriété de la même famille jusqu’en 2013 ! Son actuel deuxième propriétaire donc, décide d’entreprendre un important projet de restauration pour l’engager au Tour Auto qui n’avait jamais plus accueilli de Studebaker depuis l’unique participation de l’équipage turc en 1954. L’histoire est belle, et le projet, accepté par Patrick Peter, voit le jour lorsque cette fameuse Stuidebaker prend le départ du Tour Auto 2014, 2017 et 2019. Son propriétaire l’emmènera même sur la deuxième marche du podium pour sa deuxième apparition sur le Tour, à seulement 6 secondes du vainqueur de la catégorie VHRS. Véritable bête de course, elle est équipée d’un V8 Chevrolet développant près de 500 ch… La préparation ne s’arrête évidemment pas au moteur, et ce sont au total plus de 135 000 € justifiés sur factures qui ont été investis dans la préparation de cette auto entre 2013 et aujourd’hui. Il n’existe pas d’équivalent en France : c’est une auto tout à fait exceptionnelle. Eligible au Tour Auto, la « Stude » comme son propriétaire actuel aime à l’appeler, est prête à prendre la route. Souple à piloter malgré ses dimensions spectaculaires, cette auto est un ticket d’entrée exotique pour rouler en compétitions historiques.

Little known in Europe, the Studebaker brand is nevertheless one of the automotive pioneers in the USA. The first cars were produced in 1902 and the brand quit in 1966, due to a lack of resources to invest in research and development. In the meantime, many models were produced, including the Champion, the first version of which rolled off the production line in 1939. In total, five generations of Studebaker Champion were successively produced until 1958, in all body styles. Powered by a 6-cylinder in-line engine and then by a 4.7-litre V8 at the end of its career, the Studebaker is not a car intended for competition. And yet... In 1954, a Turkish crew participated in the Tour de France automobile and much later in the late 1980s, the Studebaker Champion Coupe became the star car of the famous Carrera Panamericana which it won several times and in which it still performs today.

The Champion Coupe presented here has an interesting history. Sold in France by the importer Emile Dujardin, the Studebaker brand remains however rather confidential. Few examples were imported and fewer even are those which remain to this day. This one is one of them, registered in Herault in 1954. This Champion Coupe will remain the property of the same family until 2013! Its current second owner decided to undertake a major restoration project to enter it in the Tour Auto, which had never hosted a Studebaker since the sole participation of the Turkish crew in 1954. The story is beautiful, and the project, accepted by Patrick Peter, is born when this famous Studebaker takes the start of the Tour Auto 2014, 2017 and 2019. Its owner will even take it to the second step of the podium for its second appearance on the Tour, only 6 seconds behind the winner of the VHRS category. A true racing beast, it is equipped with a Chevrolet V8 developing nearly 500 hp... The preparation obviously does not stop at the engine, and a total of more than €135,000 justified on invoices has been invested in the preparation of this car between 2013 and today. There is no equivalent in France: this is a truly exceptional car. Eligible for the Tour Auto, the "Stude" as its current owner likes to call it, is ready to take the road. Easy to drive despite its spectacular dimensions, this car is an exotic ticket to historical competitions.
