Lancée à l’automne 1961, la Fiat 1500 berline succède à la 1200 Granluce. Le constructeur turinois, dont l’image est essentiellement associée à la production de voitures de grande série, souhaite cependant faire son entrée sur le marché de marques au tempérament plus sportif et aller concurrencer notamment les anglaises MG et Triumph, ainsi que son compatriote Alfa Romeo. C’est dans ce contexte qu’un accord est signé avec la célèbre entreprise de carrosserie voisine, Pininfarina, à laquelle est confiée la mission d’élaborer une version cabriolet et coupé de la 1500.
Le résultat se traduit par une carrosserie au trait équilibré et des lignes allongées très séduisantes contenues entre des phares ronds à l’avant et des feux arrière positionnés verticalement du plus bel effet. Jusqu'à la fin de l'année 1964, les cabriolets et coupés seront pourvus d'un moteur 4-cylindres de 67 ch et d'une boîte de vitesses manuelle à quatre rapports. En 1965, les deux versions héritent des évolutions techniques apportées sur les 1500 C Berline et Familiare. Ainsi, la puissance du moteur est portée à 75 ch, tandis que la boîte de vitesses compte désormais cinq rapports. La vitesse de pointe passe de 160 à 165 km/h, le 0 à 100 km/h est parcouru en 15,1 secondes. En plus des versions standard dotées du simple arbre à cames 1 500 cm3, des versions sportives S bénéficieront de la collaboration avec OSCA (i.e., les frères Maserati) et de moteurs double arbres 1 500 cm3 de 80 ch, puis 1 600 cm3 de 90 ch lointains cousins du moteur de la barquette MT4 de compétition. La production des 1500, cabriolet et coupé, prendra fin en 1967, la 1500 Coupé n'ayant été assemblée qu'à environ 2 200 exemplaires. Autres signes révélateurs de la montée en gamme de la Fiat 1500, les versions signées Pininfarina bénéficieront d’assises et dossiers revêtus de cuir (option sur demande dès 1963) et d’un tableau de bord élégant doté d’une instrumentation complète. Enfin, dernier détail propre aux millésimes 1965 et 1966, le sigle trapézoïdal cède sa place à celui rond entouré de lauriers, en hommage au glorieux passé de la marque en compétition au début du siècle.
Le Coupé 1500 Pininfarina présenté ici est donc d’une grande rareté. Ce très élégant coupé a semble-t-il roulé jusqu’au début des années 1990. Il se présente aujourd’hui à nous comme une auto à laisser dans son jus et à remettre en route facilement ou, pour celui qui voudrait une auto en état concours, comme une très intéressante base de restauration. Le moteur n’est pas bloqué, la plateforme présente quelques traces de rouille, et l’intérieur des déchirures.

Launched in the fall of 1961, the Fiat 1500 sedan takes over the 1200 Granluce. The Turin-based manufacturer, whose image was essentially associated with the production of mass-produced cars, wanted to enter the market of brands with a sportier temperament and to compete with the English MG and Triumph, as well as its compatriot Alfa Romeo. It was in this context that an agreement was signed with the famous bodywork company, Pininfarina, which was given the task of developing a convertible and coupé version of the 1500.
The result is a well-balanced body with very attractive elongated lines contained between round headlights at the front and vertically positioned taillights of the most beautiful effect. Until the end of 1964, the convertibles and coupes were equipped with a 4-cylinder 67 hp engine and a four-speed manual gearbox. In 1965, the two versions inherited the technical evolutions made on the 1500 C Sedan and Familiare. The engine power was increased to 75 hp, while the gearbox now had five speeds. The top speed is increased from 160 to 165 km/h, and the 0 to 100 km/h time is 15.1 seconds. In addition to the standard versions equipped with the single camshaft engine, the sporty S versions will benefit from the collaboration with OSCA (i.e., the Maserati brothers) and double shaft 1,500 cc engines producing 80 hp, then 1,600 cc putting out 90 hp, distant cousins of the engine of the MT4 racing car. Production of the 1500, cabriolet and coupé, ended in 1967, with only about 2,200 of the 1500 Coupé being assembled. Other signs of the Fiat 1500's move upmarket were the leather seats and backrests (available on request from 1963) and an elegant dashboard with full instrumentation. Finally, a last detail specific to the 1965 and 1966 model years, the trapezoidal logo was replaced by a round one surrounded by laurels, as a tribute to the glorious past of the brand in competition at the beginning of the century.
The Pininfarina 1500 Coupé presented here is therefore of great rarity. This very elegant coupe seems to have been driven until the early 1990s. It is now presented to us as a car to be left in its original state, easily restarted or, for those who would like a car in concours condition, as a very interesting basis for restoration. The engine is not blocked, the platform shows some rust traces, and the interior has some tears.
