Presented at the London Motor Show in 1979 in a first version of only 300 units, it was put into production in 1980 by reworking the previous NCR. The white-red-green color matches the colors of Castrol, sponsor of Mike Hailwood, the driver who took it to victory at the 1978 Tourist Trophy.
In Borgo Panigale they did not miss the opportunity to commercially exploit this triumph, making the limited edition 900 MHR debut on the market, even though the large amount of requests from all over the world prompted Ducati to produce it in series.
The bike was designed on the 900 Super Sport, to which few changes were made, almost all of them on an aesthetic level: on all the integral fairing characterized by the tricolor livery identical to that of Mike's bike.
