Description

Combining avant-garde Pininfarina styling with highly acclaimed V-12 performance, Ferrari’s 330 GT 2+2 was a fast and comfortable four-seat grand touring model specifically designed for America’s vibrant export market. Following the 250 GTE 2+2 and 330 America, the 330 GT 2+2 debuted in 1964. It featured the tipo 209 Colombo-derived V-12 engine displacing 4.0 liters and providing top-speed potential of more than 150 mph, making it the fastest Ferrari road car of the day, one reputed to have been among Enzo Ferrari’s favorite models. Three iterations of the 330 GT 2+2 are recognized: 505 Series I cars built from 1963 to 1965, with the canted four-headlamp frontal treatment and four-speed gearbox plus overdrive; 120 “Interim” models for 1965, with a five-speed gearbox; and 460 Series II cars with a handsome new two-headlamp design and five-speed gearbox for 1965 to 1967.

Bearing chassis 8947, this Series II 1966 Ferrari 330 GT 2+2 is an original lefthand- drive, US-specification example, originally finished in Oro Chiaro (Light Gold) over Rosso (Red) leather upholstery, the striking color combination it sports today. Factory-equipped with a five-speed manual gearbox, plus power steering and power windows, 8947 was shipped new to the US via official Ferrari importer Luigi Chinetti Motors in New York City, and subsequently shipped to Ron Tonkin Motors in Portland, Oregon, where the car was purchased by its first owner. According to known history, 8947 was acquired from a Sacramento resident by a San Francisco-based engineer in 1983, who retained the Ferrari until 1989, a year that also included a repaint in black by Bradley Hallock Co., before the car was sold to a new owner in Connecticut, who retained it until 1996. The next owner was a resident of Maryland, who would enjoy 8947 from 1996 to 2014, when the consignor acquired it.

Carrozzeria Zanasi of Maranello was selected to restore 8947 to its factory appearance and specification, with the work performed to factory-correct, concours standard and completed during 2017. The V-12 engine was removed and rebuilt during the restoration as well. Colors were returned to the factory-specified Oro Chiaro over Rosso Connolly leather upholstery, both remaining in excellent condition today and consistent with the rest of the vehicle. Borrani wire wheels provide the finishing touch and accompanying items include the mounted spare. Show appearances include a June 2019 debut at the FCA North East Region Concorso Ferrari in West Hartford, Connecticut (Best in Show), and in April 2021 at the Celebration Exotic Car Festival in Florida (Best in Class). Certification by Ferrari Classiche is documented by its Red Book on file, and other documents include the 330 GT Registry entry for the vehicle, plus a restoration book containing invoices and details of all restoration work performed.
