We have a completely restored and overhauled, very rare Porsche 912 short wheel base, soft window Targa. The Porsche 912 was introduced in 1965 as a cheaper alternative to the flagship 911. After the introduction of the 911 Porsche realised there was an enormous gap between it and the 356. As the Porsche 356 was a rather outdated design, Porsche decided to build a 4-cylinder 911, hence the 912 was born. In 60’s America people were concerned that convertibles were going to be outlawed. According to government the convertible was too unsafe in an accident. Porsche therefore decided to focus on developing a Targa. The Targa was not just a convertible, it had a large roll-cage with initially a detachable rear window and roof panel. It had the benefit of safe open-air driving. In 1966 the first Targa’s had a zipped rear window, the so-called soft window. Later the soft window was replaced by a fixed gas rear window with only the roof panel being detachable. Because the 911 Targa was a great success Porsche then also decided to build a 912 Targa variant. The 912 never became the success story Porsche had expected with only 2,500 912’s built in total. We believe that only 150 soft window 912 Targa's have survived. Porsche insiders feel that the 912 actually drives better than the early 911’s. This thanks to its lower overall weight. Our Porsche 912 only weighs 970 kg! In 1968 the car was supplied when new in Beverly Hills, the USA. In 2013 the car found its way to The Netherlands where it has since been fully restored. The Nut& Bolt principle was employed during the restoration. The restoration has been documented with a photo album and parts list. You only have to look at the car to know that this was a thorough restoration. The bodywork is in great shape with fine, correctly aligned panelwork. Much of the brightwork has either been replaced or re-chromed. The interior trim has been fully re-upholstered in the original style, leaving it looking great. All switches and instruments are pristine. But just a pretty face isn’t the whole story. The mechanical approach was exceptionally well executed. The photos really show that we are talking about a complete restoration. The mechanical parts were taken apart right down to the very last screw and rebuilt perfectly. The many new parts used during the rebuild have paid dividend. The engine runs fantastically, the gearbox change is precise and smooth, the brakes respond well to applied pressure and have a good bite. The suspension is precisely how a 912 one should be, delivering great roadholding properties. The steering mechanism has no play what so ever and allows the 912 to navigate effortlessly. Many smaller details have also been attended to as exemplified by the new locks and door rubbers. One can quite easily say that the attention to detail has been exemplary. The final result is that here stands a Porsche 912 short wheel base soft window in exceptionally good condition. The doors shut as nicely as they did the day it left the factory and the engine is actually healthier than in 1968. In short this stunning Porsche 912 soft window Targa is in sublime shape!
