Mercedes-Benz introduced the follow-up to the ever-successful W113-series SL in 1971. At the time, sports cars of all kinds faced increased scrutiny from safety regulators, and Mercedes-Benz’s safety-obsessed engineers met those concerns head on. The clean sheet design incorporated the latest in passive and active safety technology, while retaining the sophisticated style and prestige their clients expected. With the new R107, the SL image continued to evolve away from the overtly sporty, with more emphasis on luxury and effortless performance. Elemental to that performance was an all-new platform designed to house a new line of V-8 engines, which grew in displacement and output throughout the series’ unprecedented 18-year run.

With 35,702 miles from new, this 1987 560 SL is an excellent original example of the final – and most desirable – R107 variant. Cherished by only three owners, it is in fine order throughout and is presented in its original shade of Signal Red over black leather. The Carfax report shows an accident-free history, and the factory VIN stickers confirm that it retains all of original panels. The original bright trim is in good order, with a minor scuff or two noted on inspection, as are the factory-correct painted 15-inch alloy wheels with Michelin Pilot radials. Records show that in 2016 the black canvas soft top was replaced with a new, dealer-sourced item along with the associated gaskets at a cost of nearly $4,000.

The interior features original black leather upholstery which in excellent order, consistent with the car’s age and mileage. The doors shut with vault-like authority, and the cabin exudes a feeling of bullet-proof quality. Appointments include electric windows, automatic climate control, the original Becker AM/FM/Cassette stereo, airbag steering wheel, and cruise control. Original charcoal carpets are excellent, save for a minor flaw on the parcel shelf, and the wood console trim shows signs of slight fading and a single crack. Like the body, the interior appears beautifully maintained and shows this as a very well-loved 560 SL. Owner’s manuals, service records, an accessory wind deflector, and the factory first aid kit are also included.

The big 5.6-liter V-8 runs strong and benefits from regular care and service. Documents show the timing chain was replaced in 2008, and the air conditioning updated to R134a refrigerant in 2010. Other minor service items are well documented, and the previous owner used genuine Mercedes-Benz parts in most circumstances. On the road, the SL performs beautifully, with the signature hewn-from-solid feel that defines these wonderful roadsters. It is a delight to drive, and the silky-smooth V-8 propels it along with ease. The R107 is the longest running passenger car model in Mercedes-Benz history, and this fine example demonstrates why the 560 SL is beloved by so many enthusiasts around the world. To view this car and others currently consigned to this auction, please visit the RM website at rmsothebys.com/en/auctions/0120.
