Introduced at the 1963 Frankfurt Motor Show, the Mercedes-Benz 600 was one of the world’s most advanced automobiles, featuring a hydraulic system that powered nearly everything in the car, including a self-levelling air suspension. It was built in a four-door ‘short’ wheelbase iteration and two gargantuan long-wheelbase versions featuring either four or six doors.

One of the rarest versions was the 600 Pullman, a limousine that was built in a modest quantity of 428 examples. Rivalled only by Rolls-Royce’s Phantom V, the Pullman was preferred by numerous potentates and celebrities, including King Hussein of Jordan, Mao Tse-Tung, and Hugh Hefner.

Noted as being sold new to A Quimby of California on 3 July 1973, it is believed that this example remained in the U.S. until 2002, when it was exported the following year to the UK. At that time it was owned by Chris Drake, who lent the car for four years of display to Mercedes-Benz World in the UK. By 2012 the car was sold to a Romanian collector who commissioned the Kienle Automobiltechnik to conduct some freshening on its older restoration. Interestingly, it was upgraded at some point with several modern conveniences, including a roof-mounted flip-down television, satellite navigation, and a minibar. It would make a fascinating restoration project for any collector.

L'exemplaire proposé a été enregistré comme vendu neuf le 3 juillet 1973 à A. Quimby, de Californie. On pense qu'il est resté aux Etats-Unis jusqu'en 2002, année qui précède son exportation au Royaume-Uni. Il devint alors la propriété de Chris Drake, qui le prêta pendant quatre ans à l'espace Mercedes-Benz World du Royaume-Uni pour l'y faire exposer. En 2012, la voiture fut vendue à un collectionneur roumain qui chargea Kienle Automobiltechnik de rafraîchir sa restauration, déjà ancienne. On notera qu'elle a bénéficié de quelques aménagements modernes, dont un écran de télévision rabattable fixé au pavillon, une navigation par satellite et un minibar.
