Hold your electric horses! There’s a ‘hotter’ Tesla Model 3 on its way…

Before the Model 3 has even left the production line, Tesla’s charismatic CEO, Elon Musk, is already promoting an upcoming Performance variant. If you’ve been thinking about filling out an order form for the hotly anticipated baby Tesla, you may want to wait it out just a little longer…

Patience is a virtue

Elon Musk’s “top-secret master-plan” (first announced in 2006) is nearing completion — “create a low-volume sports car” (check – Model S), “use that money to develop a medium-volume car at a lower price” (check – Model X), and “use that money to create an affordable, high-volume car.” The Model 3 is the final iteration of said plan and, as order forms are being filled and production is well underway, it seems Mr Musk has already moved on to a new project: the Performance variant. While very little information has been confirmed, other than a release date of mid-2018, the Performance model could have a difficult time staying within the “affordable” range, seeing as the Model 3 already comes in at a base price of 26,650 GBP and boasts a top speed of 130mph, a 0–60mph time of 5.6 seconds, and a range of 220 miles. It seems we’ll have to wait a while longer to see how this new version will affect the pecking order within the exciting company’s ever-expanding range…
