Since 1964 the Oldsmobile 4-4-2 had been offered as a high performance option which would steadily grow in popularity. For the 1968 model year, the 4-4-2 was made as a series. The 1968 model year was the first year for side marker lights and the last year for vent windows on the convertibles. Standard equipment included all of the Cutlass items plus heavy-duty springs, stabilizer bar, special shock absorbers, wheels, special emblems and hood louvers. The 1968 4-4-2 also were fitted with a unique rear bumper with exhaust cutouts and special exhaust tips. Offered in three body styles, Oldsmobile produced only 5,142 4-4-2 convertibles for 1968.

This 1968 Oldsmobile 4-4-2 has been frame-off restored with a completion date in 2014. It is finished in black with a white power-operated convertible top and a black interior; this Olds runs with the 400-cid, 350-hp Rocket V-8 engine that is paired with a console-shift Turbo Hydra-Matic automatic transmission. It is well equipped with what Oldsmobile termed as Super Stock I wheels, bucket seats, air conditioning, power windows, power steering, power brakes, radio and Firestone Wide Oval tires.

The Oldsmobile features all factory-type chalk markings underneath and in the car’s engine bay. Full documentation is reported to be accompanying the car and goes back to its purchase date in 1968. In period, Cars magazine named the Oldsmobile 4-4-2 as its “Top Performance Car of the Year.” You’ll never get truly acquainted with such an admired car until you put yourself behind the wheel and let it prove its mettle while on the move.
