Like many American car models, the Mercury Comet had a comparatively long lifespan in its different incarnations, being produced by Ford from 1960 until 1977 as a compact saloon with a relatively small, straight-six cylinder, Thriftpower engine with a displacement of some 144 cubic inches and a power output of 90bhp. Sharing most of its underpinnings with the less luxurious Ford Falcon, the Comet had a slightly longer wheelbase and more luxurious trim as well as air conditioning, as befitted Ford’s in-house luxury brand. Transmission options comprised a three *or* four speed manual of two speed automatic unit.
It is believed that this beautiful example was originally delivered to a first owner in Italy, an American businessman, who used the car for a few years before storing it in a well-aired, d
