The revolutionary Citroen ‘Traction Avant’ was introduced in March 1934. Not only was front wheel drive employed, but also the low-slung body was of unitary construction, front suspension independent via wishbone/torsion bar and brakes fully hydraulic. The model became highly popular, not least as transport for George Simenon’s Inspector Maigret. Indeed its popularity spread from politicians and painters to Resistance members and rally drivers, seduced by the car’s style and charm.
Known as the 7A in Europe, or the Super Modern 12 if built in Citroen’s Slough factory, it was a very capable machine highly praised for its excellent road-holding and ride allied to spirited performance.
