This Boyle started life as an eight cylinder car in 1930 and was used by the Boyle team, owned by the gangster ‘Umbrella Mike’. It went from him to Lou Meyer who went on to play his part in the history of the Miiler/Offenhauser engine as half of Meyer-Drake. The car was then converted to a transverse sprung rear axle. It is thought Meyer was responsible for the current "special formula" spec of the car, incorporating a 4 cylinder 270 cubic inch Miller engine.
The Boyle is understood to have raced at Indianapolis four times; once as an eight cylinder car and three times as a four cylinder ‘special formula’ car driven by Cummings. The special formula was set up at the request of the Speedway, the regulations designed to return a type of car which was less expensive, less specialised and calculated to furnish experimental departments with more constant and tangible lessons of value in designing and building ev
