Editor’s Choice: 1969 Ford GT40 for sale

It took almost 40 years for this GT40, delivered new in 1969 as a rolling chassis, to be completed – using genuine body panels, engine, and other original components.

The chassis, P/1085, the last GT40 to be numbered by the factory during official production, was shipped to the USA where it was stored (black-painted on a trolley frame, together with its parts and components) for the next 36 years, before being sold. Finally, in 2007, it was shipped to UK-based restorer Ian Jones of Racing Fabrications to be built up into a complete car – using the full set of original, unpainted body-panels, exhaust system, driveshafts, suspension and new, unused wheels. Vitally, there was also a genuine, original Gulf Mk1-spec Gurney-Weslake Ford V8 engine, along with the correct aluminium cylinderheads and original, sequential 5-speed ZF gearbox.

The finished car – which has now competed in the Tour Auto and a Masters race at Donington – is on sale from Maxted-Page Ltd. Read the full story of the car here, or see the full list of cars for sale from Maxted-Page in the Classic Driver database.
