The second in our series of ‘icons of watchmaking history’ – by expert Gisbert L. Brunner – looks at the Breitling Navitimer.

The name Navitimer wasn’t registered by Breitling until 22 January 1955, but the actual birth of this iconic pilot’s watch was when production began in 1952.



Before the introduction of the computer, the Navitimer’s remarkable, multi-functional circular slide rule helped pilots to calculate the range available on the remaining fuel. It also enabled the wearer to convert miles to kilometres and vice versa. The popularity of this wristwatch continues to this day, with the latest version of the Navitimer boasting a self-winding Caliber 01 movement.
