New BMW 6 Series Coupé

Well, we’ve seen the convertible and now, scheduled for a debut at next month’s Shanghai Motor Show, is the all-new 6 Series Coupé from BMW.

Unsurprisingly, the hard-top 6 carries styling cues over from its convertible cousin. The coupé has the previous car’s ‘flattened’ BMW nostril grilles slightly emphasised in keeping with other all-new designs in the Munich manufacturer’s range (5 and 7 Series, for example), and has reverted to wider, flared rear wheelarches in the manner of the long-departed E31 8 Series.

Two engines will be available from launch: a twin-turbo 4.4-litre V8 in the 650i, and a single-turbo, 3.0-litre straight-six in the 640i. No doubt the popular big-capacity diesel will make an entry at some point, most likely at this year’s Frankfurt Show, together with a fire-breathing M6.

As you’d expect from BMW, the latest 6 Series is considerably cleaner and more efficient than the previous model, and is packed with latest-generation electronic gadgetry. The large-capacity boot can swallow 460 litres of luggage. That’s “equivalent to three 46-inch golf bags”, so BMW says. Bit of a clue to the likely target market there, then.
