MINI Paceman to be Launched at Detroit

January’s North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) will see MINI launch its new Paceman Concept, “the first Sports Activity Coupé in the premium small segment of the market”.

The Paceman is said to combine the ‘classical MINI concept’ with the defining features of the MINI Countryman, on which it is based. Following on from last year’s launch of the Countryman, and with the Coupé and Roadster still to come, the Paceman slots into the MINI range as a compact coupé with a touch of wedgy muscularity to the design.

An unusual feature is the glass and roof treatment, with a wide C-pillar that appears to be transparent. The roof is ‘suspended’ on top and painted a striking, contrasting colour, in an approach known as a ‘helmet’ roof.

The MINI Countryman platform means it will happily accept a permanent 4WD system, though it will be front-wheel drive as standard. The current Paceman Concept is fitted with the John Cooper Works 1.6-litre twin-scroll turbocharged engine, giving 211HP and up to 207lb ft of torque.
