New Stratos? Spy Shots Reveal Rebirth of an Icon

A modern-day interpretation of one of the most outrageously styled cars ever created looks set to be launched soon, if spy shots taken at Balocco’s famous test track are anything to go by.

The rumour is that this is a prototype for a ‘new Stratos’, the brainchild of a European industrialist who is funding the project privately – and who currently wishes to remain anonymous. The photographs, taken on 21 June at Fiat’s ‘secret’ test track, reveal a car that strongly resembles the Lancia Stratos of the 1970s – from the dramatic wedge-shaped body and upturned rear spoiler, to the characteristically curved, wraparound windscreen.

The first glimpse of the new sports car suggests styling that will stir the passions of those who admired the original. Let’s hope the dynamic underpinnings match up to the early promise of the design.
