Coys at Blenheim Palace 'The Jaguar Legend', 17 July 2010 - Preview

1962 Jaguar E-Type 3.8 Litre Series I Roadster - £50,000 - £65,000

Coys’ next UK sale will be held at Blenheim Palace. Jaguar motor cars feature large, with over a third of the catalogue devoted to the classic British marque.

Thirteen E-types are listed, ranging from a 1972 V12 Series III 2+2 Coupé (£13,000 - £16,000) to a superb, LHD 1964 Series I Roadster in Opalescent Golden Sand for £55,000 - £70,000. There’s no doubt about it, the value of these cars has gone up recently, with only the sheer number of cars built preventing them reaching ‘DB’ Aston money.

The Jaguar section is bracketed, in age, by the 1947 Mk IV 3.5 Litre Saloon (£65,000 - £75,000) and the 1994 XJR 15 Sport (£145,000 - £165,000). There’s also a ‘matching numbers’ LHD 1958 XK150S Drophead Coupé (£75,000 - £95,000) and a 2000km-from-new 1993 XJ220 at £100,000 - £120,000.

1987 Porsche 911 Carrera 3.2 - £13,000 - £16,000

1947 Bristol 401 Sports Saloon Prototype by Touring, 1 of 6 - £18,000 - £22,000

Speaking of ‘DB’ Astons, the sale has three, a ‘Refer Dept.’ 1961 DB4 Series III, a 1964 DB5 (£150,000 - £190,000) and that favourite of the saleroom, a ‘barn find’ 1966 DB6 for £50,000 - £70,000. Fanciers of the more modern, V8-powered Newport Pagnell cars will like the Buckingham Green/Tan 1997 Vantage V600 for £50,000 - £60,000.

Coys has always been strong on pre-War cars and the 2010 Blenheim sale includes some desirable entries. There are two Lagondas, a 1933 3-Litre Open Tourer (£75,000 - £100,000) and a 1933 M45 Factory T7 Four Seat Open Tourer (£125,000 - £150,000), as well as a 1925 Rolls-Royce 20hp Barrel-Sided Open Tourer by Rippon, an elegant car for a reasonable £55,000 - £75,000.

1958 The Ex-Horace Elgin Dodge III, Maserati 3500 GT - £55,000 - £65,000

As with any sale that includes a Rolls or Bentley Mulliner Park Ward Coupé, we feel it’s our duty to mention it, commenting that these are classy, practical gentlemen’s carriages for not a lot of money; £14,000 - £18,000 in the case of the 1969 example in Seychelles Blue.

More modern machinery is represented by the 2009 Lamborghini Murciélago LP670-4 Super Veloce (£260,000 - £290,000), the 1999 Ferrari 550 Maranello (£32,000 - £36,000) and the 2004 Mercedes-Benz SL600 Brabus ‘S’ V12 (£35,000 - £45,000).

1956 Jaguar XK140 FHC - £32,000 - £36,000

1964 Jaguar E-Type Series I Roadster - £55,000 - £70,000

The Blenheim sale has attracted several lots of American muscle cars, entries that include a 1967 Pontiac GTO for £12,000 - £16,000, and two 1967 Ford Mustang Convertibles modified to Shelby specification (one for £22,000 - £26,000, the other £25,000 - £30,000).

Finally, two of the more intriguing entries can be seen residing in someone’s orchard: the two Bristol ‘barn finds’. A fine pair by anyone’s standards, both are 1947 Touring prototypes and identically estimated at £18,000 - £22,000.

1953 Jaguar C-Type 'Evocation' - £140,000 - £160,000

Prior to the motor cars, Coys will sell over 150 Film Posters (including ‘Grand Prix, US One Sheet Linen Backed. Condition Fine’ for £450 - £550) and a selection of Sporting Guns.

1972 Jaguar E-Type V12 Series III 2+2 Coupé - £20,000 - £25,000

1961 Bentley SII Drophead Coupé by HJ Mulliner, 1 of 8 - Refer Dept.

1969 Mercedes-Benz 280SL - £25,000 - £30,000

2009 Lamborghini Murciélago LP670-4 Super Veloce - £260,000 - £290,000
