Auctioneers Edward Bridger-Stille and his colleague, Edward Rising, sell another car
It was standing-room only at the very first ‘Historics at Brooklands’ auction. In a £2million+ sale, the top-selling car was the 1931 Bentley 4½-litre Vanden Plas Supercharged Open Tourer by Harrisons, achieving £670,500.
That old ‘Aston Martin barn-find magic’ had moved from Newport Pagnell to stockbroker-belt Surrey, as the restoration project 1954 Aston Martin DB2/4 Mk I 3-litre Coupé sold for £89,400, while its convertible, running condition cousin (a 1955 Aston Martin DB2/4 Mk I Drophead Coupé) found a new owner at £162,037.
Other big-ticket items included the 1964 MGB Roadster ex-Works Rally Car (£141,922), an attractive, Old English White 1958 Jaguar XK150 Roadster for £70,013 (not bad, considering its £45,000 – 55,000 estimate) and the well-restored, DB180 Silver 1960 Mercedes-Benz 190SL (£67,050).

A less-perfect, black 1959 Mercedes-Benz 190SL achieved £23,000 – well demonstrating the cost of restoring these cars and the premium garnered by a top-notch example.
Throughout the catalogue were examples of good-value classics, many of which sold on the night. Cars such as the 1973 Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow Series 1 (£7599), the close-cousin 1973 Bentley T1, a nice blue example selling for £9387, and the restoration-worthy 1973 BMW 3.0 CSL (sold for £12,733 but needing a fair bit spending on it).
Whoever paid £83,477 for the 1935 Bentley 3½-litre Saloon by Freestone & Webb bought not only one of the finest cars in the catalogue, but also the Freestone & Webb name, too, as the company was included in the sale.
Expect to see 'F&W'-badged merchandise coming to an accessory store near you.

Sale-goers were surprised to see a superhero stalking the marquee. Clearly looking for Robin. Yes, the caped crusader was there in person to supervise the sale of his Batmobile. With a CRASH! and a POW! the gavel went down on the black and red promotional vehicle, selling (with premium) for £33,007.
