Coys Légende et Passion at Monaco 30 April 2010 - Preview

The discerning collector, pausing to reflect between practice sessions at the Monaco Historic Grand Prix meeting, would find it hard to choose between the 1956 Maserati A6G 2000 Zagato Competition Berlinetta (above, 860,000 - 950,000 euros) and the 1963 Porsche 356 Carrera 2 (160,000 - 120,000 euros) - just two entries at Coys’ 2010 Monaco sale.

To these you can add the ex-Giotto Bizzarrini 1965 Bizzarrini 5300 Competizione Berlinetta estimated at 260,000 - 300,000 euros, the ex-works, Brian Redman/Lucien Bianchi 1968 Cooper BRM Formula 1 car (275,000 - 290,000 euros), and the ex-Count Trossi 1939 Alfa Romeo 6C 2500S Corsa Spider for 350,000 - 400,000 euros.

Sales at Monaco, as during the Pebble Beach week, have a knack of bringing out the very best entries. If the selling weekend on the Côte d'Azur coincides with the biennial historic racing festival, the bar is raised yet further.

1995 Bugatti EB 110 SS, 700km from new - 'Refer Dept.'

1958 Aston Martin DB2/4 Mk III - 120,000 - 150,000 euros

The ‘competition section’ of Coys’ event is boosted by the 1978 Porsche 911 Group 4 Rally Car (110,000 - 130,000 euros – just imagine driving it from Monaco to Grenoble on the Route Napoleon...) and a rare 1994 Jaguar XJR 15 Sport. The latter is one of the low production cars styled by Peter Stevens, and of a type that occasionally supported Grands Prix as a one-make series in the early 90s.

Instead of the small-capacity turbo V6 of the later XJ220 (Coys has a ‘Refer Dept.’, 1996 example of one of these in Monaco, too), there’s a full-blooded, Le Mans-type, 6-litre V12 mounted amidships. Compared with one of Stevens’ later designs, the McLaren F1, the estimate of 175,000 - 200,000 euros makes the metallic British Racing Green car an attractive, more affordable proposition...

Interestingly, the sale also includes two 1988 ‘Aztec’ design projects by Italdesign, the Barchetta (45,000 - 55,000 euros) and the Audi-powered coupé for 62,000 - 75,000 euros.

1980 Torino Motor Show Ferrari Pinin Prototype - 'Refer Dept.'

Just a few days after the Monaco Historics, the Mille Miglia will start from Brescia in Italy. Several entries are catalogued as ‘Mille Miglia-eligible’, and include the 1930 Fiat 514 MM Spider (225,000 - 265,000 euros), the 1957 Austin-Healey 100/6 (39,500 - 47,500 euros) and the 1955 AC Ace (130,000 - 150,000 euros). Meanwhile, enthusiasts of the Thames Ditton marque will also like the left-hand drive 1957 AC Aceca, reasonably estimated at 55,000 - 65,000 euros.

1968 Citroën DS21 Chapron Cabriolet Palm Beach, 1st Series - 80,000 - 100,000 euros

1974 Porsche 911 Carrera 2.7 - 30,000 - 35,000 euros

On the more recent road car front, there’s a 1972 Lancia Fulvia 1.3 S Zagato (14,000 - 16,000 euros), a 1973 Lamborghini Urraco P250 S (26,000 - 30,000 euros) and a 1995 Bugatti EB 110 SS - with just 700km ‘on the clock’ from new - at ‘Refer Dept.’ for price.

Finally, you racers out there, how about the ex-Team ELF 1971 Tecno F2 car? As French as they come, this blue, red and white single-seater has been driven by an all-Gallic line-up of drivers that included François Cevert, Jean-Pierre Jabouille and Patrick Depailler. It’s been hillclimbed in recent times but would make a sensational, and very, very fast entry in the HSCC’s Historic Formula 2 Championship.

1971 Tecno F2, ex-François Cevert - 57,000 - 67,000 euros

1950 Allard K2 Roadster, FIVA and ASI ORO - 80,000 - 95,000 euros

1952 Siata Diana Gran Sport - 130,000 - 150,000 euros

1995 Alfa Romeo ES 30 RZ Spider- 40,000 - 50,000 euros

Prior to the motor cars, Coys will sell 90 lots of automobilia including ‘Luigi Villoresi – A Fantastic Selection of Race-related Memorabilia’ for 8000 – 12,000 euros.
