Now in its 18th year, the Hamptons Auto Classic auction will, in 2009, sell over 60 classic and modern collectors’ cars.

The event will be held at Bridgehampton, in the heart of one of the most desirable areas of the USA. The name will also be familiar to Classic Driver readers as ‘The Bridge’ was a famous race track of the 50s and 60s, the scene of many a Trans-Am or Can-Am battle. Sadly, it is now a luxury golf course.



The entry list for this year’s sale is a broad mixture of classic European and American cars. Significant entries include the 1964 AC 289 Cobra and the 1962 Ferrari 250PF Cabriolet II. Both cars carry identical estimates: $525,000 - 575,000.

1967 Alfa Romeo Duetto - $20,000 - 25,000

1957 Jaguar XK140 DHC - $105,000 - 115,000

Jaguar is well represented with nine cars, ranging in date from the 1957 Jaguar XK140 DHC ($105,000 - 115,000) to the 1973 Jaguar XKE V12 ($55,000 - 60,000). Like Jaguar, Austin-Healey is another marque with tremendous popularity in the US and the sale includes two ‘big Healeys’: a 1965 3000 BJ8 for $40,000 - 45,000 and a 1966 3000 BJ8 for $55,000 - 60,000.

1961 Mercedes-Benz 190SL Roadster - $50,000 - 55,000

1947 Buick Super convertible - $70,000 -75,000

Mercedes collectors will be interested in any one of the several iconic ‘Pagoda’ models, as well as the 1961 Mercedes-Benz 190SL ($50,000 - 55,000), finished in the classic colour scheme of silver with red leather.

Naturally enough, there are many American classics in the catalogue, including no fewer than seven Corvettes. Pricewise, buyers can choose from a 1966 Chevrolet Corvette 427/425 for $40,000 - 45,000, to $135,000 - 145,000 for the 1967 Chevrolet Corvette 427/435.

1987 Porsche 911/930 Turbo Coupe - $32,500 - 37,500

There are two Aston Martins, the 1988 V8 Volante ($60,000 - 65,000) and the 1986 Lagonda ($27,500 - 30,000), and three Maseratis. Joining the more modern 1986 Quattroporte ($15,000 - 20,000) and 2005 Cambiocorsa ($50,000 - 55,000) is a 1967 Ghibli. $70,000 - 80,000 is the estimate on the latter.

Finally, no US auction is complete without a ‘Woody’. The 2009 Hamptons Auto Classic catalogue includes a 1948 Buick Roadmaster Woody, likely to fetch $100,000 - 110,000.
