Coys in London and Padova 2007 – Review

Coys finished its 2007 programme with auctions in Italy and London. One of the top sellers in London was the ex-Count Trossi 1939 Alfa Romeo 6c Sport Competition Spyder by Touring, finding a new owner at £356,000. In Italy, a bumper catalogue included such rarities as the unusual 1968 ATL Alfa Romeo-powered sports coupé you can see above.

On October 27, Coys held a sale at the Auto Moto d’Epoca show at Padova, near Venice. A highlight was the super-rare 1962 Porsche 356B Carrera 2 Cabriolet selling for EURO 294,200. Also at the same venue, another Porsche, a 1960 356B Carrera 1600 GT Four Cam Coupé achieved EURO 260,000, while local honour was upheld by the late-entry 1969 Ferrari 365 GTB/4 Daytona 'Plexiglass' selling for EURO 249,400.

The catalogue had a good selection of predominantly Italian sports cars to suit most budgets, and successful bidders bought both Abarth 750s: a 1956 Allemano Cabriolet (EURO 112,000) and a 1958 Record Monza (117,000 EURO) as well as the much-fancied 1967 Lancia Fulvia Zagato Sport Competizione (EURO 45,000). The latter generated deserved comment at the Finali Mondiali meeting at Mugello, also held that weekend, some 200km away.

1967 Lancia Fulvia Zagato Sport Competizione - Sold for EURO 45,000

1960 Porsche 356 B Carrera 1600 GT 'Four Cam' - Sold for EURO 260,000

1967 Maserati Quattroporte - Sold for EURO 23,600

1975 Maserati Indy 4.7 - Sold for EURO 33,040

The 'racing team' 1958 Fiat 600 Multipla Abarth created huge interest and after fierce bidding was eventually knocked down for EURO 31,200, while the one-off, 1968 ATL Alfa Romeo-powered sports coupé (top) saw bidding from all over the world. It eventually sold for EURO 98,000.

Several Maseratis were catalogued at Padova: the 1967 Quattroporte, giving someone a nice family GT for EURO 23,600, and the 1975 Indy 4.7, finding a new buyer at EURO 33,040. Of the two Lamborghini Miuras, the blue car did not sell but the orange 1968 example did, achieving EURO 265,000.

'True Greats' in London, 5th December 2007

The London sale entry was dominated by three 'recreations' of the highest order - all of which sold - as well as a 'Plexiglass' white Ferrari 365 GTB/4 'Daytona' and the ex-Count Trossi Alfa (above).

The 'recreated' Alfas, cars built using many original-type components and finished by some of Britain's top historic racing restorers, looked superb in the saleroom. The 1932-type Alfa Romeo 8c 2300 Spyder Corsa Evocazione sold for £409,650, and £207,000 was paid for the similarly well-finished 1932-type Bugatti Type 51.

1952 Bentley R-Type Saloon - Sold for £14,000

1970 Ferrari 365 GTB/4 'Daytona' - Sold for £152,625

1934 AC 16/80 Roadster 2 Seat Competition Model - Sold for £107,925

Ex-Works/HWM George Abecassis 1952 Aston Martin DB2 - Sold for £86,693

The ex-Count Trossi 1939 Alfa Romeo 6c Sport Competition Spyder by Touring generated considerable interest on the telephone, eventually selling for £356,000. Meanwhile, the white 1970 Ferrari 365 GTB/4 'Daytona' sold for £152,625 – another hotly contested car.

Other cars of note sold included the famous 'Round the World', ex-Works/HWM George Abecassis 1952 Aston Martin DB2 that did very well, selling for £86,693.

Of the London sale, Coys' Managing Director Chris Routledge commented: "It was a great sale. Rather than having a huge number of cars we opted to have some of the highest quality cars on offer anywhere in the world and it paid off."
